I've been summoned but i believe there's a interview process before accepting you.

what kind of questions do they ask?

if its one day, not too bothered but i don't wanna be there. main reason is i have loans and don't get paid if my bum is not in that work chair. the jury pay is $hithouse as well

In the interview just say:

"I believe the crims are all guilty or the cops wouldn't have charged them in the 1st place, so why are we waisting time with the court process, just lock 'em up"

or something along those lines and they probably take you anyway.

Good luck.

they put everyone in groups you are taken to the court room you listen to the case then the jury is picked from the group there is no deffinate you will be picked for the jury this could happen several times in the day depends on how many cases there are on the day will determine how many jurys will be needed i got selected and sat a 8 day trial trust me they are very interesting you may think like this now but after its over you will look at jury duty a different way very interesting indeed

im lucky enough to work for my fater inlaw so i got paided

Fisrt of all, have you just received the letter to say you're on call for jury duty for the next 12 months or have you received the letter that says you are required at court on a certain day? If the latter, you have to ring up the day before to see if you are still required. If so, you must attend.

You will spend many hours at the courthouse before you even get to any interview process to decide if you will be on the jury itself. You have to register, then a bailliff (or something) will brief the group. You have to watch a video. There are very few acceptable reasons to be excluded but they send you that information beforehand so you should read it. If you have one of the acceptable reasons you can apply beforehand to be excused.

On the day, you can have a laugh at some of the excuses some people come up with! They will split you into groups or panels (e.g. A, B, C etc.), then you sit and wait for your panel to be called. Take an iPod, book, pack of cards etc. because the waiting part will bore you to tears. If things are going slow in the court room, the bailliff might say you can go outside and get something to eat or drink but be back by a certain time. They provide a light lunch, eg. sandwiches, soft drinks plus tea & coffee etc.

I have been called twice to Penrith court. The first time, we sat there from 9 until about 2, then we were told we could go and our duty was done. Either the offender pleaded guilty or some key witnesses didn't show or something. The second time, we were there until about 12. Another panel was called in. My cousin happened to be on that panel and he came back out after 30 mins - he wasn't picked.

My employer still pays me if I attend for jury duty so income loss is not a concern and I can't take the payment but I do get the small travel allowance they pay. I do understand the concerens of the self-employed or those with less friendly employers. My last call-up was last year, so I can't be called up again for 3 years. My duty has been done.

As inconvenient as it may be, I personally feel it is important to do jury duty otherwise what faith can we have in our justice system?

Cheers,

Baz

Hottyscotty,

Firstly, Jury service should be regarded as an honour not a problem. It is you civil duty to appear and serve when called. You would have been notified a while back that you were placed on the current roll. So it cant be too much of a surprise.

Secondly, check with your employer, as most of them will make up the shortfall in your pay or pay you full pay for being on jury duty plus what you get for being there. If you self employed you may be able to argue hardship not to be empanelled on a long trial.

As for the other comments posted. Wait till you are in the dock. It does not take much to find yourself charged and before a jury these days. Senario, Driving home from work. Mobile rings, look down to see who is ringing. ( not to answer it and that is illegal) Run red light. T-Bone a car. KIll the other driver. Charged with neg drive causing death. Resulting in a jury trial if you plead not guilty,

Would YOU want some useless scumbag on the jury??? Or a decent rational person that can listen to the evidence and make a clear, concise finding with the facts??

I know what situation I would rather be in.

Think about it

P.S. I have not been invlolved in the situation used above, it has only been used as an example to make a point.

Sorry to hear you feel it an inconveinience to be selected for jury duty, but as it has been noted the justice system relies on a range of the public to be chosen from and it is interesting and can be a laugh listening to the excuses they use to be excused

I have been called up about 6 times for Dowling centre local court and once for supreme court, of this I have been dismissed twice and didn't have to show, sat around waiting and then released not required twice, called into the court and not called up once, called up but rejected by the prosecutor once (could have been the bikers leather jacket black tshirt and jeans worn by a big ugly guy with a beard) :074: and empanelled once for a 2 week trial (Romanian drug runners)

there are provisions to be excused have a look here jury service Q&A sherriffs office

I recommend that you take something to relieve the bordom while you wait

Most times you'll be out by lunchtime and then you could go for an afternoon :1fishing1:
