Justin Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 An old wharfie told me recently that if I ever catch a jewfish that i should crack its skull open and inside i will find two bones that aren't attached to the outter skull but are just lingering inside its head. There is an imprint of a bird's head on the two bones and he had cufflings made from two similar bones. True/False? he seemed pretty adamant about it.
moses Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 true they are called jewls hence the name jewfish it has been shortened from jewl
Justin Posted June 11, 2009 Author Posted June 11, 2009 oh cool anybody here collect or keep them? i googled some pictures but they just look like lil stones to me
mrmoshe Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 (edited) try This thread...also, if you do a search for 'jewels"...there's probably more. Cheers, Pete. Edited June 11, 2009 by MallacootaPete
Jewhunter Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Yes they do have jewels & they are impressive. They are the onolith bones behind the eyes. The bigger the jew the bigger the jewels! Cheers, Grant.
sniper Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 The jewfish jewels are the OTOLITH bones or ear bones. They take some digging out if you dont know where they are.
Jewhunter Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Thanks for spelling out my spelling mistake sniper. I'm glad I gave you an idea. Cheers, Grant.
pauljm Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Got bag somewhere with jewels in it from fishing in the 90s...unfortunately no real big ones in there... i remember seeing a mate suspiciously digging his fingers in to a fishes head at the fish markets one time so im asking him what the f are you doing.... "im going for the jewels you fool" or something like that was his response...lol.... he had no chance with his fingers so whos the fool? if i can find my collection ill post a pic.
Jewdreamer Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 The Jewels are a wonderful thing. You know the old conversation in the pub....."I got one this BIG!!!" You say show me the jewels. They are pretty accurately in proportion to the size of the fish and you can have your P///ing contest with some evidence! Lost all mine when the threw me out years ago, but they certainly are a good souvenear and they sure settle any arguments! Chris

jewgaffer Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 (edited) i never new anything about this. Very interesting dose anyone no what they do? Hi Jaygra The jewfish jewel houses a powerful sensory organ that senses the movement of food and also notifies the jew of approaching danger by being able to detect and distinguish a variety of vibrations... ie the vibrations produced by sharks etc as well as being able to detect your own struggling solitary live bait for instance, from quite a distance away.....jewfish have no teeth as such for protection against predators other than using their gripping and crushing power.... Cheers jewgaffer Edited June 12, 2009 by jewgaffer

Moro Mou Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 I have seen a few people collect the gill rakers from big barra as a trophy before and have certainly heard about the "Jewie Jewels". Maybe slightly off topic but do any of you know whether the "gillrakers" from a barramundi give can be used in a similar fashion to determine age and size of the fish. Thanks Moro Mou
Berleyguts Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 I've also heard of people who collect the bones from the bumps on old man snapper. Baz
