GregL
Nice one Ritchie! On looking at your first post earlier I thought it looked like a Dehavilland as I had one of them as my first boat many years ago. Fished the Hawkesbury and just out the front in it. Caught a shed load of fish in it and had so much fun. Cheap to run and we took it places boat most probably shouldn't have gone.... =) Good luck with it and may many stonkers come over the side! pelican
Good on ya. I know it is all exciting and everything but I am going to play devils advocate here Why has it got a hole? Have you done a water test? Can you do that on Wednesday and he can show you how deep he plunges the trailer and any launching quirks? What fuel mix has he been using , get his left over oil. Safety gear, oars etc? Have you had someone do a compression test on the motor or is it written on the service records? Spare tyres for trailer , spare rollers , any other boat parts he has lying around, spare plugs for the motor? Spare or damaged props? Motor manuals or receipts? Get all the safety gear and anhors etc the bloke has lying around. Make sure you sort insurance and Revs check before paying and taking away and make sure you get a suitable receipt so rego transfer goes smooth. I always like to see drivers lic and to copy details and make sure the collection address is his and teh boat rego papers line up. If not boatcoded be careful. Best hints I can give it to put some sikaflex in the hole and plug it up. Use it and check it all out before you pend any money or change anything. We have all bought boats and had grand ideas and even done afew but often it is better to wait a while and see how you use it and what you really need. Ask here before you start painting prep or such as that boat is of the age where they used chromate paints and if you want kids later you need to take care as it is poisonous. Check your towball and lights etc and buy adaptor if flat to round is required or just buy a lightbar. Hope it is all ok and the bloke is honest. If none of eth above makes sense ask a few more questions. Regardless of last services it is worthwhile for peice of mind to get it checked properly so you know if any stuff hasn't been done properly and that allows you to go into the future and keep on top of issues so you don't get stranded. jewgaffer
Ladies and Gentlemen, i FINALLY BOUGHT A BOAT !! ......Hull condition is great except tiny 1mm hole at the front.. Good on you Ritchie, gee that was quick ....I can't see you getting your fingers burnt with this particular boat.... A good solid De Haviland that comes with forward steering and a 1999 25 Hp Johnson that looks brand new, plus a respectable trailer and all those extras is a good buy at $1700 and I'm sure it has a lot of potential... I'll tell you one thing mate, when you get a good boat at a price like that and like it straight away, any work that has to be done shouldn't be skimped on at the expense of good looks or material quality, and any modifications should be carried out either by a professional or in a professional manner so as to add value to the boat..... If you don't make sure of that, you'll lose interest and everything will go down hill fast..... You might be able to do something about the pull start later....Look at it it this way, if a second hand tiller steer pull start package was worth say $10,000, the same package professionally done with full forward controls, that didn't do much to reduce fishing room, would bring $15,000.... Ritchie, where exactly in the front of the hull is this small hole that you refer to ? If it's not in a seam, what you could for now is clean up the hole and fit a small boat bung in for the time being, anyway who cares if it's permanent as a bow bung might be able to help with under floor aeration with the stern bungs pulled out when the boat's off the water... ritchie
wow..thanks everyone !! I feel like a little boy who gets praised and congratulated by his teachers for getting good marks for year 2 maths! it is a great feeling and this is something i was wanting to do ever since i was 16!! now im 30..so go figure! hahaha... the best thing is that my also supported the idea .. she's probably sick of me perving at those nice boats on trailers drive past me! Pelican, you remind me one of my uncles, who is the "thinker" and the "cautious" one in the family..he's the one who makes sure everything is okay&double cheks everything even in the middle of weddings & christnings! once again, thanks for the awsome advice.. ..to answer few of your questions.. The tiny hole is caused by a submerged rock. can see the small dent from outside the hull. I was releived to see there's no rust there.. I have viewed the service receipt (serviced by C&M marine @ Toongabbie in Dec 08) however, didnt specifically look for the compression testing etc..will do it on Wednesday It was too late last night to do a water test but "tested" the owner by asking and he didnt freak out! hahaha.. he sounds/looks like a good man the address on the rego matches with the actual pick up address and the owner even invited me to visit this upmarket restaurent which he manages. Forgot to mention, it comes with a spare fuel tank, bimini,a boat cover, oars, life jackets,1/2 bottle of 2 stroke oil, marine carpeted false floor,a spare tyre i will ask for the motor manual etc..the boat is boat coded. I am not rushing in to do any mods etc..by the looks all it requires a decent paint work and the reason i concider is because my neighbour is a professional painter! .he'll do the job free for me and yes, we have a 2 months old and the first thing id check will be the paint's safety i have a name for her in mind, but will wait till i give her a new paint

Sounding a lot better now with the extra details. Cautious - mate if you asked on here who screwed up with their first boat purchase or has had a lemon motor in the last 50 years you would be bowled over in the rush as lot of us have made serious mistakes that have huge dents in the wallet - might not even admit to a few in case the wife sees it. Boats like cars are so easy to screw up on and spend all your time being worried about them, patching them up and then losing interest as you have spent the time fixing not using and enjoying. If there was an award for poor purchases my mates would take it out from dud motors, hull with a million pin holes, to a trailer that had been fibreglassed up before painting and let go on the main road 5 minutes from the sellers house. Stolen boat reposessed after first day fishing when old owner recognised it as a stolen boat at the ramp. Mate the stories , and there are some classics are all a good laugh now as we lived through em both physically and financially but at the time it could have gone terribly wrong.
