marcel haber
Decided to go for a fish on Friday 10th July. It was a last minute decision and after weeks of bad weather I decided to risk it and just head out. I was going nuts for the past 5 weeks without getting my fishing fix. Anyway I launched around 5.30am and headed out to middle head, once there the chop was bad and the swell made it uncomfortable , I managed to catch a few jackets and then decided to head back into calmer waters. Tried a few spots around the spit and balmoral, the water was cold and the fish were not on the bite, they never seem to be on the bite when I go fishing. I caught a 46 cm King fish around Balmoral island, it took a prawn bait as I was drifting. The fish gave me alot of fun on lite gear I landed it removed the hook and sent it back to grow a little bigger. Tried some bram fishing around pickering point, the soft plastics were chewed to bits by the jackets and not much seemed to be interested in the prawn, squid and pudding baits that I presented. All in all a very slow day I pulled up stumps at 2.30 pm and headed back home. It was just great to be on the water again and the waters this side of the spit were still enough to make a great day out. Marcel.
Jewdreamer
We all have slow days, me more than most! Anyway, at least you got a day out. Remeber a bad day's fishing is better than the best day at work! Cheers Chris
jewgaffer
Good to see you getting out and having another go in Middle Harbour Marcel.... Looks like the deepwater out in the open like the eighty foots in places like D'Alboras and Pearl Bay is not fishing too well during the day....The fish must be schooling up and holding somewhere so it might pay to fish back in close to the inaccessible rock areas and persevere anchored in those type of area as it could be a case of better fishing where no one usually fishes..... zen801
Hi Marcel, MH in winter is very hard work. We have had some winters where you could fish right thru and still pick up some good fish like big kings and schoolies. Mate this winter is not one of those years. I probably wont bother with MH until september onwards unless some reports come in to indicate the fish are moving back into the system. If anything just do the night long shot for a jewie at the known spots. Cheers
marcel haber
Thanks for the replys Gaff AND Zenman, The water temp was bloody cold and I noticed this when launching and retreiving the boat myself. I did try and hang in there for the day and hung in the bay due to the crappy weather and conditions just past Balmoral. I trawled inside as well but the area was just lifeless except for the jackets. Like I said the conditions for inside were good and I was hoping that maybe around chinamans beach the trevally would show up. It was just great to take the day off work and get onto the water, I always feel like the ocean is calling me and I feel excited and alive when im on the boat and chasing the fish. Marcel. jewgaffer
......I trawled inside as well but the area was just lifeless except for the jackets.... Twin 1 I think most people have often struck that with leather jackets, Marcel.... when jackets are in big numbers they tend to take over a whole area for themselves...... It's best to use wire rigs and get some take homes out of them until they go.... or I'd run different size live baits and squid in other spots and try and sort out places where the jackets are unlikely to be regardless of the depth of water there....
