chris268
Hi all, Been browsing the forums for quite some time now and have decided to join to get some suggestions for a new reel (current one broke this morning at Wisemans). I got my first fishing rod/reel combo less than a year ago. Just a bit of land based fishing for bream, flathead etc. Rod is a Uglystick Exceed. Length - 2.10m/7'0" Action - Light Line rating - 2 to 4 kg Reel is a Viva Nexus II NT35II (baitrunner type) with 10lb line. Just a few questions... - I'm looking at spending $100 or less, is there anything you can recommend that will match my rod? - Will a baitrunner style reel be better than just the usual spinning reel? - Would i be able to do some squidding with this combo? Been reading a bit on squidding and it looks like fun Cheers, Chris
stinger
yep you should be able to squid with that for the reel you could look at a 4000 size reel such as a sedona do you use the baitrunner feature? if you do you could get a daiwa regal btr which is ok okuma are by far the best value for money reels Around ( i reckon) but many people dont like em my mate caught 13 blue groper several over 30kg and caught a 18kg sambo when i went with him the other day on a okuma eclipze e65 with 50lb braid and it hasnt let him down so there you go pretty good for a 130 buck reel. hope it helps cameron
Hodgey
Unless you use the 'bait runner' feature now, I would bother with one for the target species you mentioned. A 2000 sized reel is plenty for those species as well as squid huntin'. Shimano, Daiwa and Penn all make nice reels in the price range you mentioned, so go in and have a play with a few and see which one appeals to you. Happy shoppping! Lasty
For that rod and price range I would go for a 2500 Sienna which you should be able to get for around $

jewgaffer
I'm not known to harp about fishing tackle unless it is in fact first class and value for money, but take a look at Banax reels ...They are on special at the moment and I bought a couple rated for 300 yards of 10lb line that cost me just over $100.00 each and they originally retailed at $200 each... These are fair dinmum quality all the way thru and are one of best made reels in the light line class that I've ever had in my hands. chris268
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. What is the difference between the Shimano Sienna and the Sedona FB and Sedona FD? I've got a Shimano catalogue and they seem very similar. Also how does the sizing system with reels work? i.e 1000, 2000, 2500 etc Cheers Edited July 19, 2009 by chris268

It would save you a lot of research and shopping around and you would get the Fishraider member's discount from Pete as they sponsor and support the site, and it would only cost you around ten dollars by courier for next day delivery to your door... This is the best way to get an honest and sound opinion on the right reel to buy for that sort of money and I will bet money that you will be very pleased with your new reel just as much as I would be, just based on Pete's recommendation alone Cheers jewgaffer Edited July 19, 2009 by jewgaffer
