Fished Deadwoods In The Yak

Hi all

Well! What can I say!? The plan was for some yakkers to get together & hit the 'Deadwoods' area early on Sat morning. It was drizzling pretty well all the way down to Newcastle from Forster on Friday afternoon & I was thinking ..... oh dear ..... we may be cancelling if it is like this (or worse!) tomorrow .......

As I was coming from 'afar', one of the yakkers, Rowley, had suggested I stay Fri night at his place & I could follow him down to the venue, an invitation I was only too pleased to take up! My yak sat happily on the tarp covered bed in the camper, with rods & lures next to it, ready for action!

Up bright & early on Sat morning (it is years since I have been up at 5.30am! ) and followed Rowley down to Elliot St. Pretty well everyone was already there! Heavy fog greeted us & I couldn't wait to get onto the water!

We're off & heading towards the Tubes, fishing along the way

The Tubes

post-2231-1247975125_thumb.jpg

I thought .... how the hell do we fit thru that!?? But we did! It was high tide, so not much room to manoeuvre in! My head was scraping the ceiling! These are big drains that go under the highway & you have to go thru them, to reach the water on the other side. A bit spooky going thru the Tubes, but fun!

It opened out into a lovely expanse of shallow water, where Rowley had had previous success with his beloved Pencils ...... so, after seeing an explosive hit on one of his, I started chucking my Sammy around. Had 2 enquiries, but no hookups. Lots of mullet around too.

I followed the rest of them up into the channel leading towards Deadwoods. A couple of offshoot interesting creeks will be explored on subsequent trips, I reckon!

Now, this is real dead wood

post-2231-1247975258_thumb.jpg

I pedalled round for some time, casting at trees and shallows with no hits - trying to avoid hitting the numerous submerged stumps that litter the 'lake', then made my way out to the creek again, where it was deeper & Ferguson & others had had hits already.

I saw a couple of water top 'sucks' and put on a tiny popper that I had bought up at Macksville ..... it had 2 trebles on it, but I took the top one off as it made the popper sink, tossing it to where the bloop had been .... 2 casts later & a nice little 27cm bream jumped on board! I was no longer fishless!

Finally, I am onto a fish!!

It was pretty quiet, but very pretty, fishing the creek

One of the guys had told us of his EP caught on the way up to the trees, so I was hoping to find one on the way back. It was not to be. The tide had dropped somewhat, making it easier to fit thru the tubes but as we emerged the other side, we could see that the wind had come up big time, causing white caps. I fished around the next bay & had 2 hits on my chubby (something fast & black streaked past my yak after the first hit) and my 'repaired fly/spin' rod acquitted itself very well. It had a fish on momentarily, then it got off. Can't wait to blood it properly! I could see the fish activity over near the outlet, but couldn't latch onto any. We all headed back to the vehicles, to pack up & head home.

It was a fun day on the water - that really is a special spot! I reckon it should 'go off' in summer! Hmmm, now where have I heard that before??

Cheerio

That's a pretty fishy looking area Roberta ..... since last century you seem to cover more ground the Leyand brothers ever did... watch out for a comment from Mallacoota Pete on the top pic with the 1920's look lol

Great report Roberta. The fish didn't come out and play, but you had a good time and that is what it is all about. Those tubes look like a tight squeeze.

Byron, that pic Pete was talking about was taken in 1886. We are talking 2 centuries ago :074:

You get to visit some amazing water Roberta :1yikes:

The photo of you in the fog is terrific. Love the look of all that dead timber! Going through the tubes must have been an experience in itself! I have quite a few of those little poppers, and also fish them with one treble. Because of the diminutive size of the lure itself, hookup rates are pretty good. I look forward to future reports letting us know what you find up the little creeks ;)

Cheers

Glen. these are two before and after photos of Roberta, and I'm sure the first one was taken off the coast of Turkey in 1916 showing Roberta fishing off one of the destroyers by the look of it...

:Funny-Post: that is brilliant Byron :074: . That fog picture does look like a destroyer. I Better watch out for those torpedos when I am fishing Wallis lake next time :074:

Now we know why Roberta is the predator. Her yak is really a warship in disguise the HMAS Predator.

Good one Byron!! It really does look a bit like a mini destroyer!

Yes, Ian - I reckon those little poppers will 'go off' as the weather warms up! I got one of the 3 colours & at $7, not a bad price. Re the Tubes - you have to remember which one to go thru or you could get stuck!

Hey Stoney - someone reckons you can even get mahi mahi up near the hot water outlet!! One of our guys got a diamond trevally there on the weekend! I thought they were tropical fish, too!

Roberta

hehe Glenn - my 'Fisharoo' name on the yak is getting a bit chewed up with the oysters ...... perhaps its next name will be Predator!!! :1prop:

Hi Roberta,

Definately have to rename your yak The Predator. That would be awesome to see that name on the water.

Thanks guys - was out again on the lake today - landed a couple of small flatties on lobbies & spooked a couple of big ones in the shallows. Tossed some sps & hbs for bream, with no takers (it is 12 months this week since I caught my PB on Chubby 42cm bream!) I was hoping to duplicate it. May have to hit the racks instead of the shallows! :( I don't like losing lures!!

Also had a go for blackies, got plenty of downs, but they wouldn't take the hook! I could see them in the crystal clear water, laughing at me! :tease: Maybe I am a bit paranoid! :1badmood:

On my way back to the car, I met up with a fellow Raider who now lives at Blackhead - Steven Mc was out in his yak! We chatted about favourite lures & sps & will no doubt get together sometime soon, for a Yak Rack Attack! :biggrin2:

Hey Roberta

Boy have you bought back memories their!!

Family had a waterfront place at Mannering Park for like ever and yes thats where the fishing bug got me from the age of, who knows, lets say knee high to a grasshopper.

We knew the tubes as the "Pipes" and because of the warm water got all sorts of strange creatures there.

Your photo in the mist reminds me of many a morning fishing in the bay in a really peaceful atmosphere.

Its a little bit more populated now though.

None the less, my pop used to take us down to the creek there and being originally from Mudgee, taught us to fly fish in the creek, that was before the days of SP and wacky do HB's.

Suggests next time you are there give the flies a go!!!!!!!!!!!!

We did crack the brimbo's on them.

Also further up this Bay going out towards Chain Valley bay, will PM the spot if you like, at times you can get Gaint Herring, Yes the Northern Variety. Late Summer season only but they are there occasionally for reasons that are obvious. Again try Flies, awesome fight.

Thanks for your post and photo's, loved them. Hope the above enhances your fishing experiences on the great Lake Mac in the future.

And yes your yak does now need to be named "The Predetor".

Cheers

Great Stuff Roberta,

I grew up fishing the pipes and I can say that it is a fantastic place to fish. we chased flathead there for years on plastics and on the right tide there are some true monsters there.

You mentioned about some interesting side creeks. i would definatly recommend venturing through these in mid spring to summer. you may ne surprised at the quality fish you cn pull out of there.

Might see you up there one day I have a place at wyee Bay literally 100m walk to the pipes (although I don't live there)

Hi Roberta If you ever get to team up with Steve Mc and all your yak mates at the same time, I reckon we'll soon see some action packed photos of Yak Rack Attack chasers all over the racks in front of the office of old Mr Barclay :1yikes::D
