olitay Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Headed out to the Peak on Sunday morning for a bit of Jigging action and I was the first boat there! 5.45am, pretty dark and gloomy and nothing on the sounder, searched and searched for some signs of kings and then I came accross this.......... You can imagine my excitement when the sounder lit up. Down went the 300g jig and just as the sounder predicts on the way up at about the 60M mark - Whack.... I landed a small 65cm job. When the current is pulling to the west like Sunday I tend to crank the boat into reverse and drop to get a vertical line, done it many times before but I was on my own on Sunday and trying to drive and jig at once is quite difficult indeed. I took my eyes of my line for a second to steer the boat when line started peeling of the Stella, at first i thought i was onto something HUGE so I held on with excitement and let out a yahoooo to boot, but then i realised what was happening, the line was wrapped around the prop. I quickly turned the boat off and realized i was up the shit!!!, about 150meters of BRAND NEW fins braid had wrapped. The next 30 minutes or so I was trying my best to reach the prop to free the line but it was really difficult, i contemplated jumping in the 18 degree weater but in the end managed to set the line free...... So, after what seemed like an eternity I lifted my head and looked out to sea. Its amazing how you become consumed in what your doing when your confronted with a dilemma. I didnt notice the 10 or so boats surrounding me Jigging like mad! You would think one of them would have come over to help me. So with my favourite Jig set -up out of action I had to rig my last 300g jig onto a crappy rod with what looked like 12 pound "something" line and NO LEADER!!!!! I was sure I packed it..... I knew I had no hope of landing a decent fish with this set up, I really wasnt sure if I could even lift a 300g Jig with it. Well, just as assumed my next drop connected with what seemed like a small fish to start, I actually didnt call it for a king at first, it fought slow and swayed side to side, didnt know what the heck it was. A couple minutes later a LOVELY 80cm plus job breached to the side of the boat, I couldnt beleive it was a king.....It took one look at the boat and dashed. After a decent battle back up he came only for me to stuff up the gaff shot . It was very Painful watching him slowly swim off, especially with my last Jig still attached to his mouth. Out of jigs, i decided to just hang around and watch the other boats, heaps of kings were landed, there looked to be 3 charters out and a commercial trap boat also. I recon there were some good fish caught yesterday.

bongie555 Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Did you get any on Saturday? we were actually at 12mile on Saturday, got 2 there jigging and 1 on the downrigger, the best went 77cms. on the way back stopped at Longreef, the operator we were with has a camera set up with his downrigger and as the sun was going down our livies got harrased heaps ( i think the yakkas we had were just a little bit too big)and we could see up to a dozen fish(on camera) following but only managed to hook up twice, 65 and 67 cms.

Spanker Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Hi Billy, Thanks for the report mate, I could feel your pain! Can you explain what the picture on the sounder means? I have no idea. Thanks Spanker
olitay Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 Hi Billy, Thanks for the report mate, I could feel your pain! Can you explain what the picture on the sounder means? I have no idea. Thanks Spanker Ignoring all the surface clutter at the top of the sounder, if you concentrate on the bottom section of the sounder, the 60M mark you can clearly see a MASS there. and under that on the bottom right you can just make out red blotches. These are quite indicative of fish on my sounder. The mass in the 60M mark is where i picked up the kings, now im also guessing there are a shit load of Jackets in that school also, if they were just big kings it would look more like the bottom right image on the screen.
