tan the fisherman Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 (edited) Hi Raiders, This may have been covered before - apologises in advance. I have managed to source some excellent quality fluorocarbon at a fantastic price and understand the leader quality's of fluorocarbon etc. My question is - can I spool my whole reel with this fluorocarbon, since its so cheap and the benefits are so great OR would I be better off spooling around 40% mono then the fluorocarbon? It is 8lb and going on a 2000 reel for soft plastics (bream & Flatties), squidding and sabiki jigging. Thanks for your advice. Tan Edited July 27, 2009 by tan the fisherman
Ray R Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Hey Tan , if it's affordable then there is nothing wrong with a full spool of fluro..
bass_beginner Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 mate id go mono backing braid and then probably 10 or so metres of fluro if you cann tie a uni that goes through the guides easy enough then there is no harm with that as its the setup i run
jewgaffer Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Hi Raiders, ....This may have been covered before - apologises in advance. Thanks for your advice. Tan Hi Tan there are different types of fluoro carbon - fluoro carbon nylon fishing line in spool on lengths - fluoro carbon shock leader which is an in between mono line and high stretch - and abrasion resistant fluoro carbon leader material which costs around $20 for 25 metres of 10lb and $70 for 50 metres of 60lbs.... Did you get hold of a bigger spool of 8lb fluoro leader at a good price did you mate? Cheers jewgaffer
Anti-Carp Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Be careful there are some fluro carbon brands that are way too stiff and have no line memory at all. What will happen is that the line will spring off the spool and will cause you a heap of grief when using it. There are some other brands such as Berkley Vanish and the Line Systems fluro carbon that work a treat as a man line.

micksfishn Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 1 spool per reel 2000 size reel youll prob need some backing with 10 lb so just topshot the vanish over some mono backing this is just a opinion 10lb might be a bit to heavy but see how you go if your not getting the results drop down to 6lb mick

Michael Hatte Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Hey mate i been using berkly vanish for around a year now just for leader material with great results, 10lb vanish onto 4kg braid... Pulling rat kings from under various markers around the bay, flicking for lizards and also nailing jews up the Georges over the last couple months... Im very impressed how much presure you cant put on this stuff, knot strength is 10/10 usually the braid will lets go before the mono does... Cheap and come in big spools, Cant go wrong. Mick
Kingpin Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 ASSO make a 100% Japanese fluorocarbon that is designed to be used a main line. Saw some at a shop the other day. Really nice and supple.
jewgaffer Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Hi Tan .... you could make a bird of it by using Black Magic fluoro leader to hook which is a good leader to handle in the smaller sizes or Ande fluoro leader to hook which also has very high anti abrasion qualities.... I think you should consider adding one of these fluro carbon leaders as the leader off your Berkley Vanish main line...the problem with using fluoro carbon shock leader is the fact that most of brands hardly have any stretch....standard shock leader like Supple Trace or Tough Trace is still the best shock leader to use because of the stretch qualities... Having good stretch somewhere in the line, and using a shock leader as the middle line is always handy particularly when fishing light in deepwater or in places where you may strike bigger fish than you are fishing for...
