Fishing Maroubra

Popped down to Maroubra last night for a quick beach session. I had some live beach worms and I wanted to either use them or let them go before they kicked the bucket.

It was pretty much low tide when I turned up and the options were limited. There was a big gutter to the left of the flagged area which looked to be a couple of metres deep - and it was getting most of the wash off the sandbar so I thought it would be a likely spot.

After about half an hour of bugger all (except for the standard nibbles by small mullet right at the water's edge) I had to revise my evaluation of the gutter. It certainly had depth of water - but there was so much wash funneling out through it that I simply couldn't see anywhere that the fish could sit and feed from. Every cast was being sucked out through the main channel within about 10 seconds, no matter where I cast it, and I was losing light very quickly.

So I moved south down the beach - looking for a shallower gutter with a little less current. Once I found it I lobbed out the worm and within a minute I had landed a just undersize flattie. He went back and five minutes later I had the bait decimated by the unmistakeable tap tap and run of a whiting. Next cast and I was on to a very nice winter whiting of about 40cm.

By then the light was pretty much gone and it was getting very cold - so I released the remaining worms and packed it in. I reckon if I'd started at the gutter I finished on I would have got a few more fish but it was still a good way to finish the weekend.

Hi Mondo, if you find more of those big whiting can you send up my way cause there ain't none up here or they are very good at hiding.

Good onya for using your nous to find a couple of fish...

Mondo! Mate, I don't know if you remember but I fished Maroubra with you once, me and my brother! We got a nice salmon but it was pretty dead for the rest of the night. Anyway mate, it's good to see you hitting the good old spots, hows the soarer going?

I've been fishing the lower north shore most of this year, but will most likely see you around when I head to the beaches again, good luck!

Hi Mondo good size winter whiting, as Nexus said very early mornings are the go, before they get chased away more than likely by a school of salmon shooting past I'd say... Keep it up Simon, I can see a fair few whiting dinners coming up for you down there at Maroubra....

By the way Danilo welcome back into another one of those what fish is that suburbs...

Cheers

How could I forget Dan - we had a great time but didn't catch any fish once I showed up! Let me know if you're coming back my way and we'll have another go.

Gaffer - as much as I'm sure you're right about the early morning options I'm one of those guys who simply refuses to get up early - especially on the weekend!
