Metal Detecting

Has anyone ever tried metal detecting? It's my other favourite past time (after fishing).

It's not typical of a guy my age (27) to be walking around beach or park with a metal detector, kinda of a geeky thing to do, but I love it!

It's very much like fishing. Finding a $1 or $2 coin is very common kinda like catching a keeper sized Bream or Flathead and finding a diamond ring is the holy grail, just like a 30kg Jew.

Another similarity is that some spots start to fire in Summer, due to people out on the beach or running around the park more often.

Of course you get your throw backs like ring pulls or bottle tops (I collect these and bin them), again very similar to fishing. With a good detector and the knowledge of how to use it you can discriminate what types of metals you don't want to target.

My detector cost me about $1800 but I reckon I've collected about $300 so far in coins, i've used it about 20 times.

You'll be shocked to know that most undetected parks hold between $10-$30, I don't do it for the money... it's just fun.

If there's metal in a spot, my detector will find it.

Is that thing water proof?

How about i lend u a snorkel and u go to some of my spots to pull my blades out from the river?

There's gotto be a few hundreds bucks worth of lures right there!

Musty

:)

Unfortunately, your vibes are there to stay. You can get waterproof ones, your talking $5000 up.

$12 a snag is harsh... SP's for me when in snag country, but sometimes I just can't resist and flick one anyway.

Hi Mick

I get the Gold Mags from the library now & then & get excited about finding gold with metal detectors ....

seems you need to spend some $$ to get a decent one .... it would suit my 'wandering tendencies' in the campervan ....

might catch up withyou sooner or later!! :)

When I was 18 & living in WA working around alot of gold mining areas it wasn't unusual to see 10 - 15 guys on the sides of the roads or in padocks looking for gold on a trip between Kalgoorlie to Perth.

My mate & I borrowed one once (for a few hours whilst working alongside a guy who had one)

We walked across a padock & got loads of hits, with our little shovels & kid like enthusiasm we must have dug 30 holes about every metre across that patch of dirt & slowly getting frustrate that there was nothing there. Old mate came over & watched us for a while & then started cracking up laughing. We'd been detecting our steel capped boots the whole time! :biggrin2:

Worth the money IMO if you've got the time to play with it, it's great for kids too they get a real buzz finding stuff. Gold Detecting though is a total different ball game, expensive detectors. I'm into Coin and Relict hunting, let me know if you're ever considering buying one and I'll tell ya what I know!

That's happened to me before, you can do it with steel caps but you lose your scan range and you get a sore arm holding the detector away from your boots.
