Sinking Braid

Hi fellow Raiders,

I am about to purchase a Nitro Voodoo and match it with a Daiwa tdr 2500 size reel for Snapper on plastics.

My fist question, do you think this is a good setup for snapper out of sydney and surrounds?

Second question, ive heard a lot about Platypus sinking braid and was wondering if anyone had used it and if theres a better alternative?

thanks for any help in advance.

Tight lines to all :1prop:

G'day topgun...

Sorry I didn't reply earlier but I was hanging back because as some members know, my company has a professional association with Platypus... Since I didn't see any other replies thought I'd pop my 2 cents in but take my feedback with that in mine please.

I use sinking braid for snapper plastic fishing on a couple of my outfits and really like it. I can drop down a jig head weight. The flip side is that it is noticably thicker than SuperBraid because the Sinking Braid is made from a blend of fibres with some high density stuff as well as the PE. That's how they get over the tendency of braid to float... but it's not as fine.

Works great for snapper plasticing and I also just used it floatling for the first time last weekend and really liked it. The extra diameter may be something for you to consider if you're after super-fine line for any reason.

Hope that's objective feedback.

Cheers, Slinky

Thanks Slinky, bias or not any feedback from some of the wise fishemen on this site is great to hear :biggrin2:

If i get a spare spool with the TDR i will put sinking line on one and normal braid on the other that way i can get a good idea of what suits me best.

What line class or weight would you recomend? the rod is a 4-6kg rating but Nitro always understate their rods!

Thanks for the info

What George says is spot on. I use 4000 size reels loaded with 20lb. Sometimes I'll even go up to 30 and I've also got a spare spool for my 4000 Stradic loaded with 10lb for when I'm feeling sporting (suicidal!!)... I took a 2.5kg red on it a few weeks back but anything much bigger and you'd have to be very lucky in rough shallow country.

Hi Topgun

I use the Nitro Magnum Butt and Viper, they are both excellent rods that have caught heaps of fish. The Nitro Viper is rated 6 to 8kg and I use 20lb braid due to the number of big reds we get at Port Stephens. This rod has been pushed to the limit on 100's of fish and I am always amazed at how it stands up, even landed a 10kg blue groper on a plastic. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I have never tried the sinking braid, to be honest I don't mind the floating stuff as you get a lot of bites midwater on the sink.

In my shed is a box containing 6 x 2500 size reels from a very popular brand, none of these reels lasted more than a season and I would recommend going to a 3500 or 4000 if it's in your reach. The extra drag comes in handy on big fish and they last longer.

Thank heaps for the heads up:) I already have a 4000 size reel thats matched with the viper for the larger fish. but im just worried that a 4000 is too big for the voodoo and it wont balance very well. i might have to go with a light 3000 size for that little bit extra in drag pressure.
