After reading Roberta's report on using 1lb line it inspired me to go have a crack at a jew using some very light leader material....

The area around the m5 brigde has been fishing well over the last few weeks for small jew's, all around the 40cm-60cm mark but still lots of fun on light gear.

I was using 4kg braid and 6kg trace up until today when i decided to lighten the leader to stupid 4lb, hehehehe let the fun begin!!! :074:

After attaching it to the braid it felt surprisingly strong.. HA HA BOY WAS I WRONG!!!

Started to plug away and 10 mins into it had the lure belted, felt like a good fish but the whole affair was quickly over :ranting2:. I wound in the slack and the leader was shredded, those little teeth were going to be a problem...

Next fish same result but i managed to see this one. I just had to be lucky and lip hook one and im in for a good chance....

Fishing went very quite and it was not looking good to land one of these Stinky Silver things on 4lb leader....

I was in the (ONE MORE CAST MODE) and the sun was just about gone when the plastic had a few faint taps, i did'nt muck around with this one and set the hook quickly hoping for a lip hook. 'WHOOO HOOO' in to another.

Felt like a better fish so i wound the drag right down, turned the electric off and stared to drift away from the bridge. After a few minutes the fish was completely knacked and was on the surface, got the net under it and brought it aboard. :yahoo::yahoo:

A few happy snaps on the phone and released it to fight another day...

This light leader business has got me hooked already.....

Cant wait to get back out there and give it another crack!!!!

Cheers, Michael.

WOOHOO!!!! AWESOME Michael!!! Gee!! 4lb leader ..... not sure even I would go that low on a jewie!!! :1yikes: WHen I was up north, I was getting barra on 6lb braid & 50lb leader ....... so don't be afraid to upgrade the leader ... you will still have the finesse of the fine braid!

I guess it is also a matter of setting the drag right too - being lighter, you have to be prepared to play it a bit better ..... hopefully encourage them away from the structure, like you did, drifting away ...... gently, so they follow the leader (so to speak!)

NICE LOOKING FISH! Great pic!

I'm Impressed!!!!

I wanna catch a jewie ..... I wanna catch a jewie ....... when are you coming up to show me how/where??

Cheerio & well done!!! :thumbup::yahoo:

Roberta

Watch out .... this light fishing can become addictive!! It is a relatively 'cheap' big BUZZ!

Mate ur gunna get people talking.

I thought I was silly using 6lb mono last time out with Musty, but we were fishing for Whiting and scored a few soapies around 55.

CHEERS ESKY

Ha ha, yeh mate i did'nt think i would have a chance on such a light leader.

Had a few sessions with musty on the water over the last week or so and were've been doing quite well, no huge fish just fun size.

Might see you out there one day mate, same boat as musty just unpainted.....

G'DAY Stephen i was using plastics, Yesterday i was using a gold paddle tail plastic. Wind is not a problem, its very protected from a westerly. You should be fine up there today, just keep moving around and try the deeper areas around the bridge. Cant make it today but Heading back out on friday for round two but in a different area. I dont think i will be using 4lb leader on friday :074:

Well done on the Georges river jewfish bloopin  ....It's good fun to fish light and use lures which are best suited to light weight gear, in turn used with lightweight jigheads to suit the lure action on one hand, but to avoid bust offs when there are big jewfish around for example, it would pay to use lures that are designed to swim just as well on the larger line classes and also when used with larger jigheads in currents etc..... ..... These lures are designed to actually improve the lure action when used on gear designed to suit the species fished for, and are designed to perform just as well when there are smaller species around....... rather than have break offs at one end of the equation and particularly when fishing away in deeper water, .....can just mean that a fisho gets used to fishing away on overlight gear in big fish territory and consequently loses the fish of a lifetime, particularly when a good quality light sporty rod could have been used on heavier gear to get all the sporty fish playing fun in the first place....

Just my two cents worth, I don't like to have or see too many bustoffs, particularly where what might well have been a particularly large jewfish is concerned and also line failure often prevents identifying the fish responsible for the bust off.......

Cheers

Light gear is feakin awesome isn't it....we had a sesh on 2.5kg sambo's with 3lb braid and 4lb leader....my wrists were screwed after a couple of fish....

Ha! so it can be done!

I had 4lb leader on last time I tried for jew with plastics and landed a nice flattie around 50cm or so, no trouble.

My mate thought I was a little crazy, but there you go! Just have faith in your gear and set the drag right hey?

Then all you have to worry about is the dreaded structure.... As Musty proves weekly though, less weight in the leader equals more fish in the boat.

I read a story in a mag recently about a guy fighting a 30lb jew on 4lb for a few hours before being busted off at the boat. That would just kill me.

Cheers, Dave

Top info jewgaffer, i really enjoy reading your post...

The posts on catching jewfish are amazing, lots of helpfull infomation for everyone to use on the water.

12-14lb Leader is the lowest i go when targeting these fish, tuesdays afternoon session was just a challange and a bit of fun. The fish in the pic went 52cm, not a huge fish but great fun on light line.

Cheers, Michael.

My claim to fame was a 94cm jew on 8pound straight through and a size 2/0 suicide hook at the Moons in the Georges. Was the most unlucky jewfish ever.

The old man had three goes at getting it in the net and missed. I told him if he missed again that I was jumping in the water and wrestling it in myself.

Finally got it in and it broke the net at the handle.

Blunted two knives trying to clean it!!! Moral to the story - sometimes catch and release is much easier...
