New Shimano Btr6500

Well I must have been a good boy all year as my friends chipped in and got me a Shimano Bait Runner 6500 for my birthday. :yahoo::yahoo:

Great friends I know, but somehow I am sure there will be suggestions that I now take them all out on the boat fishing...

So here is the dilemma, New reel means I must get a new rod to match.

So, I plan on using it mostly from the boat for larger fish, Kings, Groper, Snapper and the like. Any suggestions on the rod I should match it with.

Looking to spend up to $200 bucks...

Cheers Sunnyboy1

There is a dude on here selling a 8kg wilson live fibre spin rod. Buy that and wack it on. They are sweeettttt rods and you can put the curry on most things. May be a little light though depending on what pd you are going to use. I think my mate also bought a new mack king which looks the goods too.

Hi Sunnyboy1 I agree with wantingaboat..A Wilson 8kilo live fibre would be a nice match and a good alround sporty rod to go with your new 6500 baitrunner  ..that's what I'd buy to match that baitrunner without going any heavier on the rod side of the equation... I'm sure you will more than happy with the combo for all your harbour and heavier estuary fishing and it would be very nice to use as a sporty spinning combo for live baiting, kingfish, jewfish and light game as well....

Cheers

My mates and i have a couple of 6500 baitrunners, love them. I can recommend a 7ft Silstar Crystal Blue 6-10kg and a US made 7ft 6" 6-10kg Ugly Stick (cant remember the model sorry but it's not a top of the line one) that i happily fish 30lb braid through. I reckon the 10-15kg Silstar Crystal Blue would fish 50lb braid ok but that might be getting heavy for snapper. I know the reel doesn't put out tonnes of drag (maybe 6-7kgs from memory) but with kings and groper close to structure you can end up in some short lived spool grabbing situations and you dont always have to fish the line to max capacity anyway.

You could ask Jewgaffer about the Ugly Stick Tigers. These rods should all come in under budget at around $150 or less. Dont forget you could be up for $50 to $80 or more to put braid on the reel if that's what you decide on.

From memory the rods mentioned are a bit softer in the tip than the live fibre rods so it will depend on what feel you like for whatever fishing you are doing.

Hi Captain Spanner...I'm not a hundred percent sure but I think the drag might have been updated in the new baitrunner 6500 model ... the U.S. model 6-10kg Ugly Stik you are referring to, I feel would more than likely be the BWS, Big Water Spinning Model which is not available over here...

I have two 9 footers and a 10 footer in the 25lb U.S. model Big Waters and also 8 kilo 7' foot Bigwaters.... I really like using my 8kilo Big Water rods on my 725 non casting Alveys using 40lb Stren Magnaflex which I fish straight down the back of the boat...I use these on big baits as set rods when I'm anchored over very deep water particularly in the Hawkesbury where I cast my main rods, the Tigers over the 7' foot Big Waters and cast out the longer casting 9 footer Bigwaters and the ten footer as range finders to cover each side of a deep hole and also to get closer to where the sand meets the rocks where there is a rocky shoreline etc ...

My main rods are the 10-50lb Ugly Stik Tiger Rods but sometimes I really like hooking up on the lighter, softer Bigwater rods particularly on the one on one Alvey reels...

I guess the soft springy feel of the very sporty 8 kilo Live Fibre rod which I have used andf prefer over the heavier live fibres, was the reason I recommended it to Sunnyboy1 to go with his new 6500 Baitrunner

If I had to chose only one rod naturally it would be the 10-50lb Tiger rod..... In saying that I have ten Tiger Rods and I would use my 750 -950 Penn SS reels with the 10-50lb Tiger Rods everytime instead of using my 6500 Baitrunners on them....

Cheers

G'day,

I can vouch for that live fibre rod. I bought the 10-15kg overhead off the guy selling it. The rod is in great nick and he is a friendly and helpful raider. The rod should go great and you will still have $100 left to spool up you new reel with braid.

Good luck
