The calamari kid
Hey guys, Lauched the boat at Roseville at 2 pm with Kingslayer to allow plenty of time to get squid for our jewie session on the 8.30 high tide later that night. Hit out first squid spot and had 4 in the tank after 10 mins but it was unpleasant in the wind and chop so we switched to the other side of the harbour. Caught another 8 squid in the next 30 mins. Most were caught on the Yozuri flash dancers in the 3.25 size. With enough bait for the session we decided to hit a few of the markers to try and get a quick king before the sun set but not even the pickers were interested in our live squid. After a quick feed and a coffee we headed into north harbour to try for a jew. Picked up 6 Port Jacksons and a couple of tailor in an hour so we moved to Quarintine to get away from them. Within 2 minutes we had hooked another one, we fished the tide change here but only managed to pick up more PJ's , tailor and undersize snapper. It was 10pm and I was ready to call it a night but the ever persistent Kingslayer suggest we try one more spot in middle harbour on the way back. We anchored up and within 5 mins my squid strip got hit and I knew it was not a PJ this time. Got him to the boat to see a nice little jew. He was 47cm. A few minutes later Daves rod buckled over and he brought another little jew into the boat. 10 months I think since his last one so there was a huge sense of releif to catch one. The man deserved it but I think they owe him a 20 kg specimen for the time put in.Over the next 45 minutes we caught 5 more jew , mostly just undersize and a few missed hits. All were caught on strips, heads and guts. With the live squid not getting a touch. It was a full moon and the middle of the run out tide. All up we caught 12 calamari, 11 Port jackson, 3 tailor, 6 undersize snapper, 7 jew and a few other odds and sods. We kept 1 jew and 2 squid. Great night on the harbour. Brett. King slayer
ahh yes, it was november last year since i got one, and so to get 7 between us was just awesome. Brett didn't mention it was our first try at that spot, so it'll get a royal flogging now! Also mate, my jewfish/hours fished ratio was just doubled! zen801
Hey Guys, Well done on the jewies. Dave you are a persistent bloke. With jewies it pays off. Interesting to see them at that size as its rare in MH to get ones much under 60cm. I have never caught one that was undersize. Dave i think you gotta put more pain in before that 20kg model Good to hear they are starting to move in!!! I will ring you soon Dave as almost finished with renos then spare time back to the jewies. I havent caught once since January. Mike
southerly
Humm, undersized jewies in MH, maybe the lack of nettign is starting to pay off. A few more years maybe, could see some good numbers rahter than 1s and 2s? David
