Start Of The Mullet Run

Due to weddings/bucks parties/bdays etc I am not going to be able to do much fishing until June. I would like to get in one session trolling/downrigging live mullet when the run starts. It was around April last year I think but am not certain. Is there a set time when the mullet run starts if not what is the general month?

G'day Rick. I heard on 2KY radio that the pros were waiting for the run to start at Lake Macquarie and that strong westerly wind is the trigger. Dave.

The mid north coast boys always reckon around Anzac Day - and they're not too far wrong!

Very soon, some of guys doing the hawkesbury are starting lookout tomorrow

There is already some fish boxes on some of the beaches up north and the patonga ones get dropped this week.

A lot of rain can also trigger the run which has happened a couple of times over the last few years.

The amount of rain and wind direction has a big factor on where in the river the fish run. Sometimes mid stream, sometimes along the shore which means they can have a shot at them.

I've always found it around the start of soccer season, ie after easter. It always seems to coincide with the autumn rains, I was going to try and get out for a few jewies this year once the run starts. Should be happening now-ish,

yes your all correct i know mid north coast the boys would allready be on the look out every year at this time i see them netting tonnes of mullet of the beaches & its bloody stupid slaughter

I already saw two ute-fulls of mullet when I was holidaying at Nelson Bay over the Easter long weekend.

Its not a good site to see so many dead fish

Hi Guys,

Just joined, but have been enjoying reading the reports for some time and have already learnt a lot.

In reply to the mullet run, I was fishing the North breakwall at Swansea on Monday and the netters were there. They said that they had already got 1 lot of half a ton and the school they were watching was about a ton. I was there for about an hour and the school didn't come in close enough. There was a Fisheries Inspector there watching them. Their vehicles all had QLD regos. The locals said they come there every year to start and work their way up the coast.

How do you catch a Mullet ? there seams to be heaps in the Cowan river but they never bite.

I guess the question is: What do you use for bait?

I guess I should have been more specific but thanks for the replies. I am after the cowan/pittwater run sounds like it will start soon if not already. I have heard that the mullet schools react well to high speed spinning raiders

I don't mind a now and again and again. I live in the Southern Highlands and usually fish out of Crookhaven Heads. Hope to meet up with some of you guys sometime.
