andrew399
Hello raiders, i went to look at a boat that i might purchase today but was just worried about a couple of things, and as i dont heaps about boats i thought what better place than to ask here! Il put up a couple of photos off my phone a bit later if they came out ok, but basically there was only 2 things. Firstly, its an aluminium boat that has been repainted about 6 years ago or something and in a few places the paint has began to bubble (around the anchor well, a bit on the sides and also on the gunnels around rod holders). He reckons its probably only water thats managed to get under it over the years, but can this be a sign of corrosion? It certainly still feels very solid when pushing down on the affected areas... The other thing that worried me a bit more was the fact that he has cut into the seats at some stage. I remember reading posts on this site that this is a big no no! Basically he has put in all new flooring and storage compartments, but for one of the compartments he has cut out the top of the seat to make inside the seat storage. Also though he has taken to cuts out of the front of the seat. Doesnt this weaken the structure alot?? Its a 15ft boat and very solid... Is there different construction designs where cutting into the seat doesnt matter or are they always built in as supports? Thanks for any info! andrew399
What would you say it is boomer? Its not really that cheap either, certainly not the cheapest iv looked at anyways... and with a near new trailer and engine im not really gonna complain about a bit of bubbly paint if it doesnt mean anything. It all feels solid when i press it... Anyways here are some pics of the bubbles along the side and the cut seat...taken off a phone so dunno if u can tell much from them... a boat
Hi Dicko, I think yopu answered your own question when you said with a new trailer and engine you are not too worried about some minor corrosion (which is what the new paint is covering) which could be due to a numbe of factors, but on a trailered boat with some normal maitanance like washing with fresh water the hull will last many more years. What boat is it, what engine is on it and what do they want for it? Cheers, Huey.
andrew399
Its a 4.3m clark, engine is a 2005 model yamaha with only 61 hours on it and is electric start with forward controls and tilt and trim and the trailer was bought new in 03, fully galvanised. He is asking for 8k but i am pretty confident of getting him down around the 6.5k mark... Does that sound ok so far? With the corrosion on the hull would you recoment that i would need to get it sanded back, treated and repainted or would it be ok just with the care you mentioned ie washing it down etc? Thanks huey, and id also like to give a massive public thanks to Pelican who has answered many many many questions from me lately, and in great detail as well, so thanks to everyone that has been helpful providing info for me! Don't mean to put a dampner on your find but I think it sounds a little pricy, particulary if you have to then spend money fixing it up. You could get a new tiller steer tinny package for the same size boat for about $8k. Great piece of mind knowing that your boat, motor and trailer is new and has a warranty. I dont think that a 2003 trailer is new for a trailer. My trailer was purchased in December 2002, is washed after every use but still needs a new axle. pjbink
Looking at that photo it looks more like pitting rather than the paint merely bubbling. Ie significant corrosion. I would be worried what is causing this and whether it might continue. As others have said 8k is not all that cheap.
andrew399
yeah i dont have the money to pay 8k anyways, still at uni so 6-7 is pretty much my limit... As for the trailer, im not completely stupid i know what rust looks like! haha! the trailer is in really good condition. there is some rust on the axle but thats the case with every trailer iv ever looked at... As for whether the paint is pipping or bubbling - how can i tell the difference? It doesnt feel rough or coarse when i press down on it, just feels flat and hard... And im not really all that keen on a tiller steer either hence my need to look for a 2nd hand boat in that price range. Thanks again boys
a boat
Hi, you do not mention what HP and age the engine is and if say a 30HP without P/T/T then that is too high, but if say a late model 2008 40HP with trim than if you can get for $6K approx it is a fair price and as I mentioned the fact that this boat will spend about 90% of its life out of water sitting on the trailer the corrosion in the photos would not put me off if the you like the boat and is within budget. Cheers, Huey.
ritchie
Dicko, I've been through the same "its only paint bubbles mate, nothing to worry unless u're one of them who worries about the looks not the performance..etc..." speil once and the only difference between myself and you is that i actually ended up buying the damn thing! Similar scenario to yours, awsome motor, good trailer and a nice tinny with some "paint bubbles" but oh boy didnt it freak me out when i took it to this paint shop only to find out the bloody thing is covered with corrosion left right and centre.. the painter reckons its was NOT worth fixing it unless im prepared to spend approx $2k to fix the whole thing (excluding the cost to pull the motor out, turn the boat upside down etc..) So, ive ended up selling it less than half of the purchased price.. so there, my little boat story..however, that being said im not saying the one you;re looking at is crap..but shop around.. on another note, if you have approx $6k budget, why dont you go for a good sized half cabin glass boat..much more comfortable.. andrew399
Thanks huey, its a 2005 50hp with tilt and trim. Iv decided to bite the bullet and if the bloke agrees to my price then il pay a professional to come and check it all out just to ease my concerns. If he says its not worth it then I wont bother. Thanks for the info ritchie, your story is what made me decide to get it checked out by a more informed person!
cut_loose
if he doesnt knock the price down and keeps it at 8 than keep looking mate ! i got my 2004 quintrex estuary angler ( Forward Steering ) with marlin trailer + 40hp yamaha 3 cylinder ( 82 hours on clock ) for 9 k worth saving up a bit more maybe mate ??
