Mullet Off The Wharf

Hi all,

I haven't really got that much of a report but just today we bought a new house in newport, and my good friend *young gun* happens to live in the same bay as where we bought, as my parents were busy signing contracts etc etc i walked around the bay to his house, where i found him cleaning gear from a recent trip that morning, when we saw a large school of mullet swimming past his wharf. We threw out some handlines with tiny little rusted hooks and some old bread and sure enough, we landed 3 mullet in succession, in the space of about 5 minutes.

Had never caught a mullet before, and now these models, about 35-40cm each will sit nicely in the bait freezer until the time comes for them to be converted into some nice pan sized bream or flathead!

Looks like the move to newport is going to bring some awesome fishing adventures bettween matt and myself :1prop: Looking forward to it mate!

Cheers all,

James :1fishing1:

Good job dude i find it so easy to catch the smaller mullet you can catch them one after the other but i rarely catch the bigger ones they're hard to burley up and when i do catch them im always on 2 pound line because im fishing for the smaller ones for liveys and can hardley ever land them the line hold fine but the hooks always too small bends out.

Good job mate!

Yeah mate was awesome fun. Really fun and they diapered when you left hahaha. There are going to be many great fishing trips to come. Really looking forward to you moving up here. To bring the mullet up you need to burley a fair bit, in a wide area and slowly bring them closer in.

Yeah mate, they are great fun on hand lines and go fairly hard. Prawns would be the preferred bait for them, but when there are no prawns around bread is a good alternative. Perfect size for decent strip bait as well.

Cheers Young Gun :1fishing1:
