not sure what line i should be putting onto my new setup

last thing i want to do is end up with a snapped rod

the line weight for the rod is rated at MAX PE5 which i think is 50lb ??

i had planned on putting 80lb but after watching one of Nectics old videos of a rod being snapped on a tuna i want to make sure i have the correct line on

setup is going to be used for jigging and livebaiting

any help would be great

cheers

its very misleading when products over here use PE#. Using a table the number denotes the diameter of the line not the strength. PE5 could be 50lb for some manufacturers or in YGK's case PE5 is 78lbs. I reckon they should also give the max drag for the rod like the japanese specs. Just want to clear that up for you.

But saying that any 50lb line should be fine

Hi FT,

I dont think that it matters if you use a higher poundage line.

Why? Well because the drag on the reel will slip at the same amount of pressure whether you use 50Lb or 80Lb line.

If its a 50 Lb rod you probably wouldnt want to use more than about 12Lb of drag on the reel anyway so whether you use 50 or 80 lb line doesnt matter. Provided that you dont set the drag too high the rod will handle the stonger line no problem.

Should you decide to use the heavier braid it will give you a bit more abrasion resistance when you are jigging as well.
