mako1
I hit the water at about 6am armed with some new surface lures to try. I took the crab nets with me and set them out straight away. The wind was quite strong so I started out trolling around and picked up two bream. One was 26cm and the other was 29cm. After trolling for a while the wind dropped off so I went and checked the crab nets. There were no crabs so I headed to the flats. I began casting a Sugapen around but I didn’t have any hits as I think it was a bit big. I changed to a NW Pencil and I straight away started to get swirls around the lure and some hits. I then changed to a Jazz lure and halfway through the first retrieve the lure disappears in a big swirl and the whiting takes off across the flats. This was a good fish so I backed the drag off and took my time. After a top fight of about 5 minutes I had my first whiting caught on a surface lure in the net The whiting went 40cm and sets my new PB pretty high. A few more casts later I’m onto my second whiting and it went 28cm. The wind started to pick up again which made the surface fishing difficult so I collected the crab nets and headed for the back of the bay. I set the crab nets around the leases and began to troll around. I didn’t get any hits so I put the drift chute out and began casting vibes and plastics around. I caught a couple of small flatties at first and then I had a slightly better hit and hooked up to a 27cm bream. I continued working the area and I had three quick taps on the plastic. I set the hook and this fish took off across the flats. There was a lot of weight so I thought it was a really good flathead but as the fight went on there were more headshakes then the usual flathead fight. The fish continued taking strong runs in the shallow water but I eventually got it close enough for a look and I saw it was a big bream. I backed the drag off slightly as I was in open water and I worked the fish to the kayak and finally netted it It was a good fish which went just under 40cm and is a new soft plastic lure PB for me. I checked the crab nets again but they were empty so I collected them and headed for the mouth of the bay. On the way I picked up a 50cm flathead on a soft plastic lure. It was a really good day on the water and it was also good to get a couple of new lure PBs. I can’t wait to do some more surface fishing for whiting as it’s a really fun way to catch them. The better fish from today.
