roosterman Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 well like most people i went in search of kings sat and this was my first serious fishing trip in my new boat. went out early and had no probs getting yakkas as you see in the pic taken at the baitground. only gave the squid a half ased attempt for one little tim tam but knew the kings were hitting anything atm so was not worried and i had a couple big frozen southerns as backup... how flats that water eh.wish the weather was like that all the time,or just the times i want to venture out anyhows.. we rounded the headland and not much was sounding so went to next spot, again not alot was showing so headed towards the main spot i know thats more often than not holding good fish. decided to check a likely looking spot half way and good kings stacked up so we loop back and as we get the downriggers deployed a guy off the stones lands a kingy.. mmm good sign but were staying way outa his casting range so hope they dont all head in too close..took the second pass for the xrap to hookup (i buggered up the tracking on gps) and a rat was quickly brought aboard & another pass and the schools had moved, prob in closer and i didnt want to encroach the rock fisho so we ventured to the main battlefield.. got to the spot made a sounding run as its my first time fishing it and there was a couple good showings.. loop around deploying bombs and i start casting a sluggo towards the wash and structures.. i comment to my mate about the kings breaching and chasing my lure and then bang hes on woo hoo. im rapt for him and this sets the scene for a couple hours of fun. we had a few double hookups and they were pretty much hitting anything but unfortunately they were mostly rats. i rigged my shimano raider 2-4kg with stradic 2500 and 6lb and sent the smallest yakka out on top. i nearly forgot about the bream gear as it was abit hectic at times when my mate goes yr on as i hear the little stradic sing that lovely tune. i lift the rod out while my mate starts clearing the 2 x dr i steer the boat to deaper water and hope he doesnt reef me... whooa what an adrenaline rush.we put put out a fair way with me leading him out and luckily he kept turning the way i wanted him. he made some blistering runs and i tightened drag as much as i could once i got far enough away from structure. this was my first king on the silly string and i was rapt to get all right to this point.my mate was on the phone giving commentary ,as mates do.the slow pump and wind,i take some he takes it back tussle continues for 4 - 5 mins then as he gets near i back drag off & instruct my mate about me likely to be diving rod down deep etc as he runs from boat and no panic net shots.. right on cue he dives but im waiting for him and im down to an inch off the reel,he turns and heads back out from underneath.. ok steve time to start breathing again and slowly get some line back.the last run took alot outa him and soon i have him doing circles back and forth till my mate gets a ripper net shot and hes brought aboard. WoooooHoooo ,what a blood pumping adrenaline rush that was and its quiet easy to see this guy wasnt even a legal.this was such a spirited hard fighting king that even if legal i woulda put him back especially since we had a feed already.my leader and a couple of metres of braid were really badly shredded so the fishing gods really looked after me. look how far out we ended up in the pic,he was hooked about 40mtres off the stones.. had some ocean skiiers wizzing past at times, gee they got close for the speeds they were doing. anyhows it was a great day out even though no big kings were hooked the rats sure kept us entertained asnd thats what its all about... i was back at home cleaning the boat by 11am and pretty buggered, gee i wish boats could clean themselves when i feel like that. im so glad i wasnt tempted to join half of sydney down sth and nth heads... hope ya w/e was as enjoyable as mine guys.... cheers....steve......
Dusky Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Still waiting to pick up my boat - I hope I have as much fun as it sounds like you did. well done - thanks for the report R
andrew399 Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Nice work steve and congrats on the new boat! Dont forget to give me a ring when you are ready to offload your down riggers!
Day's Fishin Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Great post Steve, pity the speed jockey's don't have the same respect for others like you showed for the rock hopper. We have the same problem on the upper Hawkesbury with them. One day one will pick up a lure around their leg as I have have lost a couple from them running over them & sonner or later a tripple will embed itself. Regards Jeff
arpie Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Well done on blooding the boat, Steve!! Pretty soon, you'll be into the grown up Kingies!! Have fun with the new toy over the Festive Season! Cheerio Roberta
roosterman Posted December 22, 2009 Author Posted December 22, 2009 dusky hope yr new boat gets bloody decks and serves ya well.. looks like a nice clean unit.. fun and relaxing with mates is what its all about and getting a feeds a bonus.. thx groper,im still buzzin when i look an see her in my driveway.. dicko, mate ya first in line. if ya want ta get out over the new yr give me a buzz.. jeff i grew up out west an we spent many a time upriver and looking back i cant believe there wasnt more accidents. yeh some boaters just dont show respect whether its fishoes, yachties or skiiers.. as for the rockhopper, well theres a whole ocean out there for me but only a tiny bit for him so its only right to let him have whatever he can cast to.. thx roberta,it was a good way to kick off my kingy season as i haven't chased them since Easter. hopefully if the weathers nice first week of jan i will be doing my best to find those bigger ones but any kingy is a good kingy if ya use the appropriate gear for their size.. i can see my little bream gear getting another go as it was soooo much fun... have a nice xmass all. cheers...steve...
