Hi Raiders,

I am thinking of buying a hand held GPS to keep onboard. i dont really know much about them, so i was wondering if you would be able to help me out with some information and which ones you would recommend and also do they come pre loaded with marine maps? (i cant seem to find an answer for that on the websites)

I'm not looking at spending much, around $300 or so dollars max. the one i am currently looking at is

Garmin GPSMAP 76. does anyone own one or own a similar one

I'll i will only use it to enter way points and track my trips etc.

Any information or help would be great and thanks in advance

Merry Xmas to you all

Dave

I've got a Garmin 72 and it is absolutely superb!! You may not have to go to the 76, the 72 is about $195.Check them both out to compare.

Cheers, Tuffy

Dave,

Just fitted my Quinnie with a Lowrance GPS/Plotter and Navionics gold, I have in my possession my Garmin 72 and Lowance x125 both in excellant cond, GPS sits in a cradle and is mounted on a factory bracket that is fully adjustable I also purchased a rechargable battery kit.

The unit has about sixty marks in it mainly Sydney based, I found it very useful and worth every penny I paid for it however as I am sure you are aware its hard to beat the combo plotter but its all about remaining within the guidelines as set out by her whom must be obeyed.......... whom very nicely upgraded me at Christmas :1prop: .

If I can assist any more send me a note.

Regards Terry

If you want to save $$$$$$

Have you got a phone with GPS

I have a samsung I900 and brought a Garmin GPS program off a certen online auction that starts with E (thay wont allow me to type the name of it) for 29 bucks

Works great for the car and all maps included.

Just spend a day around your fav inlet and put waypoints in for the shoreline this will give you a shoreline, then you can work on the so called spot X's

The seller was someone called MOTO something with numbers, not to sure of them. Just search (once again the same mobe that starts with E) for the seller or programs for phones

All was above board

Seemed a little dodgy when i got it, i had to email the seller some number when the program was installed, but up she went and has not missed a beat.

I still will always recommend and compass & map for back up, but we all carry the ph.

Even in the car, the thieves cant see the suction cap thing and even still i take my ph with me.

The map of the waterway is in it but not detailed.

Im in Sydney and it has all the water ways up and down the coast. I travel to SEQ a bit and around Surfers all the channels are there.

If not for the 1st one on the boat, its great for a back up
