Balls Head

Went for a fish today with a mate of mine to Balls Head - LB - not bad all in all - 2 leatherjackets, 2 bream, 4 undersized snapper and a salmon about 4lb that was lost as we tried to land as I forgot the landing net.

The salmon took half a pilchard on a 4lb rig so was an interesting little battle. We released all the fish caught during the day and in future I will have to take my camera to take some pics for here. I leave the phone at home so I can enjoy without interuptions.

Previously there have been articles in local papers about fisherman leaving hooks, lines etc around the MacMahon, Milson Point areas and some people calling for a ban on fishing due to the mess left. At Balls Head today to mess was disgusting - plastic bait bags, line, hooks, cig butts, bottles and cans. What makes it even worst the rangers have even put a bag on a peg not less than 6 feet away for people to put rubbish in. I spent a few extra minutes cleaning up the area but I have no doubts that if people continue to leave rubbish they will ban fishing in some of these spots.

I ask all raiders if they see people leaving their rubbish ask them to take it with them and dispose of it correctly. It is time to speak out to these people so that we can all enjoy a clean and safe fishing environment. Ok thats my little bit.

Same with me mate i live around waverton and the amount of waste in the harbour is absouletley disgusting. I will have to meet up with you some time TOM!!!!!!

concur wholeheartedly re the waste issue and have posted on it previously.

where at balls head do u fish .... is there a specific spot ..

im quite local and havent been there in years ...

Thumbs up there mate, I agree totally in regard to people picking up there rubbish before they leave.

No one should have to put up with other peoples rubbish, if we dont act on this issue and dob in the wrong doers we will be shut out from fishing these areas.

So to all - dont be part of the problem be part of the solution.

Yes there is a specific spot and pretty easy to get to from the carpark - just walk along the track - down the first flight of stairs and keep walking - you can't miss it - great big rock, also has hole sdrilled for rod holders. It is about 6 feet above the high water mark so a NET or gaff is useful, just don't leave them at home like I did.

The only problem is that is gets packed very early, if you want to fish - early mornings - weekends I don't bother. I think from now until after the hols it will be packed every day so I won't be there until the hols are over. I am lucky that I work for myself and from home so I can schedule my work.

The good thing about this place is the parking is free, well for the time being.
