Mr Rob Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 (edited) Thought a few members with larger boats might be interested. I had been using the commercially available reef anchor but kept straightening them out in heaver conditions. We all know how frustrating it is when the anchor drags. So, I make the call to a mate (pro reef fisher) and he suggests the following. My mate uses a smaller model and hasnt lost one yet. You must use the trip though. A thin piece of rope is the go. For interest sake does anyone use a similar anchor? If so send pic and thoughts. Edited April 14, 2010 by Mr Rob
olitay Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 looks like it should be thrown at a dart board mate!.... let us know how it goes.

So, I make the call to a mate (pro reef fisher) and he suggests the following. Have only had it a month, but so far so good. It is a good bit heaver and is doing the job well. My mate uses a smaller model and hasn’t lost one yet. You must use the trip though. A thin piece of rope is the go. Will let you know if I lose it. For interest sake does anyone use a similar anchor? Hi Mr Rob, I have always used the plough, the trip is a cable tie wrapped 3 times around the chain,we fish a lot at night in heavy seas and has not let go or failed us yet. cheers Rick.
jewgaffer Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 That's an interesting looking anchor Mr Rob, Do you think it would hold on well enough as a sand and mud type anchor in fast currents and how would it go in hard gravel compared to a reef, an allrounder like a sarca or the more popular plough anchor? Hi Rick, for tripping your own anchors, do you just use fairly loose, finer cable ties as such or use the one or a couple of the ordinary ties, do you mate? i.e. the ones with plastic coating over fine wire like they use to tie up plastic bags... Cheers jewgaffer

Cheers jewgaffer Hi jewgaffer, Mate the ties are normal Nylon-66 4.8x300mm.I just wrap around 3 times. I tried 2 ties wrapped 3 times and nearly had the arse end underwater trying to break them, so now just use the 1 and works great. cheers Rick.
lighthouse2k Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 That anchor is called the malloolaba pick. Its popular in queensland I think and is probably the best reef anchor from what I have heard. I have one but haven't used it much.

Thanks Rick Had Tried the cable tie before but kept breaking. I never thought to go around a few times, but it makes good sense to me. Will give it a go. Jewgaffer I wouldn’t want to trust it as a sand anchor. With the addition of a few flutes mabe.
