Bruce the Postie
G'day All, Looking for a bit of help. I have a 1997 Johnson 90hp v4 that is leaking a bit of water into the gearcase,i have been told by the mechanic that the propshaft seals are good and the water is getting past the driveshaft seal?. Bring it down he says,we will sort it out for about 500 clams!!!. Does this sound about right ? How many seals are in the gearcase ? Is this a job i could do myself ? (reasonably handy ) Looking forward to answers from the Raiders brains trust. Cheers, Bruce

a boat
Hi Bruce, only way to know for sure is to pressure and vaccum test the gearbox off the engine and from you are explaining he has not done this so not sure how he would know what is leaking. It could be as simple as the drain screw washers. IF the driveshaft seals need replacing then it takes about 2 hours and about $50 in seals so $500 is very high. Also not that hard to do yourself but if the g/box has not been off in the last few years it might fight and you will need oxy and while there you might as well do a water pump too. Cheers, Huey. Bruce the Postie
G'day Huey, That was what i was told(pretty sure there was no pressure checks done) when i took it in to have the prop shaft seals replaced after i noticed the milky oil whilst i was doing routine checks. At the same time i had the impeller replaced and a service (i like to have this done by the pro's after every 3 home services just to be sure). This motor has been a good'un and gets looked after so no stuck bolts in the leg to deal with, so if its not to difficult i might have a go at it myself, but if it's beyond me i'll bring it down to Cowan in Feb when i'm on hol's.
