gooddong
G'day! Today I were fishing at Bobbin head for some garfish and yellowtail. When I left, an old man came here and told me my fishes were illegal. I told him they were garfish and yellowtail not small tailor. He checked them then said yellowtail must be alive. If they are dead, it is also illegal.(Forgot to bring air pump so one of three yakkas was dead) I told him he was wrong but he insist on it. Well, I understood the fish guide that poddy mullet must be alive as live bait but not other bait fishes. And someones filleted yellowtail as butterfly. If likes that man said, it should be illegal. Could anyone help me figure out whether I were wrong or he was? Thanks! Edited January 19, 2010 by Seager
Jewhunter
That bloke has no idea what he is talking about. There is no size limit & it doesn't matter if they are dead or alive. The bag limit is 50 of a combined garfish/yellowtail bag or 50 of a singular species. Tell that bloke to check the fisheries website! Cheers, Grant. gooddong
Thanks Jewhunter. I would not continue to worry about it and hope that fella saw this post although he told me he had fished many years.
Justin
I had a similar problem when i had dead poddies in a bucket i was butterflying ive had mixed responses when have asked more experienced fishermen what are your thoughts on that?
Day's Fishin
The other raiders are right, it's 50 of one or 50 combined in possesion. The poddies must be caught for live bait & be kept in an aerated tank or live bait tank however obviously there is going to be some who don't survive & to keep the others alive you have to remove the dead one. Use that one first & then put a live one out on another rod. Fisheries inspectors are not after someone who show's he has done the right thing, but would come down on someone who just dropped the fish in a bucket with no way of surviving. Make sure you put any unused bait fish back when leaving & you won't have any trouble. There's alway's a busy body who want's to ruin every one elses day, next time tell him what you think of his intelligence regards the fisheries rules. IN A NICE SORT OF WAY. Moro Mou
There is one in every crowd and unfortunately it is somtimes difficult to stand up to people if they are adamant that you are doing is wrong. My suggestion within reason is to always carry one of the fisheries brochures with the bag and size limits on it. They dont take up much room in your tackle box but are prone to getting wet. I printed one off the DPI web site and keep it in one of the zip lock pockets in my tackle bag that you would use for your packets of soft plastics. Keeps it dry and is always with you so you can prove that you right to the busy body. alasdair
