humesy
G'day, Not much to report from yesterday (thurs) from myself or anyone else I chatted to at the boat ramp. Set the alarm for 4.15 and as I always seem to do, I woke up an hour earlier. That gave me an hour for squidding in the dark but left me with a sore head from sleep deprivation. Anyway, long story short, caught 1 squid in the dark, 2 greeneyes after sun up, 4 slimies and a tank full of yakkas. Now a fisherman worth his salt would have converted that supply of goodies into a feed of kings but alas. Tried my hand out at the colours but was battling sea sickness in the bumpy swell from the word go. Tried downrigging around the harbour for nada and finally settled on a mooring in Middle Harbour with baits down deep in the hope of a jew. Had a slimie bitten in half and a live squid smashed by a 55cm amberjack. Had a snooze and downrigged upstream back towards the ramp with a stop off towards Bantry Bay. I finally managed a rat king on my light spin rod which bought some excitement to an otherwise slow day. For those believers in barometric forces, the BOM showed a drop of 6 points through the first half of the day. There was no queue at the cleaning table. Cheers Edited January 22, 2010 by humesy
Flano
Humesy, I know what you mean. Went out with a workmate yesterday with intent of catching my 1st Kingie ("Kia" bar crusher). Struck trouble form the outset with a boat problem at Cammeray which made us miss the squid (did get some yakkas though). Like you, tried to head outside but it was just too messy so ended up at Wedding Cake. Lots of little stuff. Had a kingie or 2 follow up the pinkies caught but they weren't interested in anything - live or dead. Got a couple of legal brim to 30+cms. Hooked up to something big for about 2 - 3 minutes (10lb braid, 6 kg rod/reel) until I pulled the hook out. Travelled around a bit trying, even went back out around the Heads (Colours ??) but still nothing. Gave it a miss after high tide trying and Sow and Pigs. Still an average day out fishing is always better than a great day at work. Thanks James, I enjoyed the day anyway - thanks for taking me out. BTW, cops came a calling to check on safety gear and liscenses. Mick Edited January 22, 2010 by Flano
jim77
Bad luck Humesy - still at least you were out there. Back to school next week eh I went out also yesterday and struggled. I even struggled to get liveys for once after a late start - finally got some very small yakkas. Tried Colours for nothing then went to some marks for some jigging. First drop of the jig got an 87cm Next drop hooked up solid again but pulled the hooks. Tried for another hour or so for nothing - tried the colours again for nothing, downrigged a few markers in the harbour for zip. Slowest day i have had for ages. Cheers What about the rise during the second half of the day yesterday Andrew = my smarty smile , four kingfish busted or straightend the hooks on our bait jigs, two landed on the bait jigs with no4 hooks plus three landed on the jew rods on 8/0s including a fat female a couple of inches under that tried to act like a torpedo but was well held up on my 725 Alvey in the same location during my session yesterday with Mik AKA Boofhead who came down from Orange. This happened while we were fishing for live bait for our jew session and waiting to see if kingfish appear in this sheltered 40 foot spot off Pittwater after we spread a large amount of burley into the calm water there- We had some sporty fun for an hour or so but lost our bait schools in the process and had to release the kingfish we caught and left to start our jewfish sessions.. When we left, there were still flashes of hoodlums here and there getting into the slimies below the rat schools that had chased virtually hundreds of yakkas away from out boat and then got into the slimies we were hoping to bag out on to have another jew session up here before Mik and his family go back to Orange... Mik's first Hawkesbury experience has presented him also with three jew out of the main river to take home, good on you Mik - while the kingfish were caught well out of the main part of Pittwater during the second half of the midday run in tide - We didn't think any kingfish at all were caught by the Palm Beach and Stokes Point boats who all had seemed to have given up and gone home by 11am anyway - there were also 12 boats struggling to catch anything at all in the swell at Fint and Steel on the way thru... I had Mik sounding everwhere in the main river from the road bridge down and no fish were sounded anywhere in the system on both sides while zigzagging into the centre occasionally on our way into the little bay I fancy towards the end of of Pittwater.. Anyway we had to end our proposed jewfish session at 2pm yesterday due to Mik suddenly having to drive in to Sydney and unfortunately last night's session had big jew written on all over it with the 6 point rise as shown below coinciding with the run out tide we planned to start off on I will do the report and post photos later today of a pretty lively session for Mik myself during the latter part of one of the quietest Hawkesbury/Pittwater mornings that you'd ever want to see.. Andrew note that the rise on the day went on well into the evening last night until it steadied at a respectable 1013 this morning only a couple of points off the 1016 which is regarded as normal weather and brings with it normal fishing again and so on. Current Barometric Pressure for today 22/1//2010:- 1013 hPa and Steady Barometer fluctuations over last 24 hours:- 11:00am 5:00pm 11:00pm 5:00am Today's Minimum 1013 hPa at 10:36 Maximum 1014 hPa at 09:56 Yesterday's Minimum 1008 hPa at 18:41 Maximum 1014 hPa at 08:59 Est. Cu Cloud Base Height 2287 meters. (7503 feet) This was the KEY to yesterday mate albeit it seems the affect of the next tide was needed after a poor early morning for everyone up there and in the harbour too apparently > Fluctuations over last 24 hours:- 1013 Maximum for yesterday until 9.30 AM this morning and holding steady as I type... 1012 1011 1010 1009 1008 1007 minimum at 9.30am yesterday Cheers jewgaffer Edited January 22, 2010 by jewgaffer
zen801
Hi Andrew, Yeah i agree, we fished tuesday for a few hours. Hoardes of pinkies and no descent baitfish. Only managed trevally and a 50cm samson. Last night looked good for a fish, dead calm, felt very fishy but unfortunately i already had a few bourbons under the belt so stayed home. If you need a jewie tragic to go deckie for you soon give me a ring. Cheers
