Krispy ! Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Hey Raiders, This Morning i got up at 8 am and decided to have a crack at my new landbased harbour haunt with my mate. Anyway we arrived at the wharf at 9 and it was empty. We took the usual spot and started fishing. I burleyed up and the yakkas were in plague proportion, As it turned out so were the kingies. I flicked out a squid strip on my light gear rod and before i closed the bail arm the line was leaving it a little too quickly. I closed the bail arm and the fight was on, The reel was playing its music and and after a 5 minute tug of war i was surprised as a 74cm Sampsonfish was in the net . . My friend had the camera in his front pocket when he was netting the sambo and you can guess what happened.A 15 metre drop to the bottom. From that moment onwards it was mayhem with double hookups, Nearly getting spooled and the net not being put down. There must've been a whole school of pelagics right under us. We would bring in kingy after kingy until we ran out of bait. By that time we had caught 9 rats 50-60cms, 3 keeper kingies 68, 77 and 79cms, 1 Sampsonfish and a 45cm bonito . My friend didnt want to go so i rigged up a halco twisty on his rod and i put on a sluggo. We went on for another hour and caught another 2 kings 63 and 71 cms and a few good tailor. We decided to call it a day as the wind picked up. I gave my mate the majority of the fish and we both went home cheering at the session we just had. Seriola lalandi,

Slabslinger Hey slabslinger, There seems to be heaps in the harbour at the moment. Persistence and fresh bait is the key. cheers, Seriola lalandi ,
slabslinger Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Haven't seen em where i am. Can't think of any 15m deep wharf areas where I fish. Mind you I was squidding in Pittwater last week. Had 3 squid about to strike my jig and 2 metre long lightning bolts charge thru the squid. Not sure if they got them or not but the squid never re appeared. I think they were kings but not sure. Even a rat to get me off the mark would be sweeeeeeeeet! Oh well. I'll keep at it.
paulthetaffy Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Congrats, that's an impressive session land-based! I can only assume that was off one of the big wharves near the bridge or balmain or somehwere like that? I haven't heard of any kings showing up in numbers around the MH wharves recently, and when they do they seem to be really fussy and very hard to catch. So I think you've done really well there! Paul

Paul try ballast point at balmain.Catah your yakkas at thames st wharf or yeend st wharf ,or try squidding on the southen face of the point east of the rock ledge .All the spots are high off the water so youll need a long handled net or cliff gaff. cast at the slipway on goat island about 50 or 60 metres out

Couldn't raise anything except for ultra-small snapper. I was tried for Yakkas around Thames Street Wharf first, but couldn't get any. I've never had much luck with Yakkas in that area though. The Yeend Street Wharf is well locked up at the moment. Last year it would be locked and the next day some fisho would have broken in. Can't say I condone it, but it IS a great wharf to fish from -I've done pretty well there in the past. I just wish they'd get rid of it OR make it safe so that fishos can use it without getting into trouble / breaking the law / potentially hurting themselves. The second option is obviously preferable. If you'd like to join me for a kingie session from there PM and me and we'll give it a go Cheers, James.
Krispy ! Posted January 23, 2010 Author Posted January 23, 2010 I might have to try what you did with your camera cut loose, im sick of losing expensive items. James ill see when ive got time to hit a kingie sesh but im pretty full this week. That was one of my best ever lb sessions. I was surprised with the size of the sambo but i guess he was moving with the kings. I had him for dinner today and geez he was nice. Thanks for all the replies, Cheers, Seriola Lalandi,
