Hello Raiders,

recently I was discussing the use of the ike iime method of "murdering fish" (as I saw it described on one website) with a friend who was recently in NZ and saw ike jime spikes on sale in a number of tackle stores. The ones he saw had a short spike (about 15cm) attached to a handle.

Does any one have any advice on how to use this method on kingfish? From my research it seems that fish dispatched this way have less blood in the flesh as the blood is withdrawn into the gut cavity after the brain has been pierced.

Sometimes when cleaning lizards there are distinct blood vessels in the flesh. Maybe I have missed the brain when I spiked them through the head with a knife??

Any ideas/thoughts??

Brain spiking fish doesn't mean you don't have to bleed them. The blood doesn't go anywhere it wouldn't normally be. You still should bleed your fish after spiking if they're for the table.

Killing a fish quickly though, stops it thrashing around, getting bruised, building up lactic acid in its muscles... and is, IMHO, a humane way to dispatch fish destined for the table. I don't do it as often as I should for table fish to be top quality.

Basically the process involve stabbing the ike spike just behind the fishes eye , it take practice to get he right spot and also different fish have a different postion to hit the mark. As slinky said you will still need to bleed the fish as you have brain spiked it.

Another was to go about it is get a fish donger and just dong it on the head and this usually just as good method and does need any practice. On my mates boat we use a 40cm fibre glass rod for the harbour sized kings.
