I headed up to the back of Woolooware Bay today to do some more surface fishing.

The conditions were great, overcast and hardly any wind.

The tide was in so I made my way straight to the back of the bay.

On my way there I was trolling two lures and I got my first hit just behind the moored boats.

It ended up being a good squid and my second one on this lure.

A little bit further down I got another good hit and I pulled in a nice flattie.

I arrived at the flats and I could see and hear bream and whiting taking prawns off the surface.

There was heaps of whitebait in the water too.

I began casting a pencil and I was straightaway into the some just under legal bream and whiting.

I then had the pencil smashed off the surface by a better fish. After a great fight I landed a nice bream.

I spotted a bream chasing a small prawn on the surface so I made my way over and cast to the area and after a couple of flicks the pencil was smashed by another nice bream.

After a few smaller whiting I had the pencil snatched off the surface by a better fish.

It ended up being a whiting just under 30cm and it fought really well with lots of quick powerful runs

A couple of casts later the pencil is grabbed off the surface in a small swirl but when I struck the fish

took off across the flats. The bream tried to bury me into the weed twice but I managed to get it out and it was soon in the net.

I had a long tom have a go at my lure and I landed a few tailor which were chasing the whitebait.

On the next cast I had a fish after my lure and as soon as I paused the lure it was taken off the surface. It was a bigger whiting then the last one and after a good fight I had it in the net.

I saw some debris in the water and some fish feeding on prawns around it. I cast towards it and was onto another nice bream.

I picked up some more just legal bream and whiting which all went back in. The tide was now quite low so I moved off the flats and trolled a drop-off near an oyster lease and picked up another nice flattie.

I made my way back to the moored boats and trolled around a bit and picked up some small bream and flatties before I headed in.

It was a top way to spend Australia Day and I ended up with a nice feed which made it even better.

Great catch never fished in this area before might give it a try soon can it be fished with a boat or just with a yak ????

Andrew,

It was a shame we didn't catch up...you had a great session as always - I caught a couple of mid 40 flatties, a nice bream and a squid in 4 hours of doing it tough. I should have headed up the back while the water was high like you did. The boat traffic around the mouth of WB was crazy as expected. Keep your prospective trips posted and I'll join you up the back soon!

It can be fished from a boat but if fishing from a boat I would fish it at high tide.

The best thing to do would be to go there at low tide as you can still make it to the last set of leases before the flats during a low tide. Then take note of all of the exposed rock piles and old leases so that you have an idea of where all of the danger points are on the flats when the tide is in.

It was a shame that we just missed each other. It would have been hard going at the mouth of the bay with all of that boat traffic but you still ended up with some nice fish for your effort.

I'll let you know when I plan my next trip there.

Nice catch of fish Mako what a top day, exciting isn't it when you can see the fish And then your hooked up.

Troy

It's definitely a very exciting and addictive form of fishing.
