shirehunter Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Hey Guys, Am a massive novice where it comes to fishing and went out last saturday in the hacking armed with a bag of blood worms and one of nippers. Well lets just say if I was fishing to live Id be dead by now.. The worms did alright, only small stuff unfortunately, however I couldnt keep a nipper on the hook for longer than about three seconds.. It got to the point I was thinking of taping them to the hook! As soon as the line went into the water they were gone with only the smallest of nibbles. Any suggestions, other than cable ties would be appreciated. Cheers Shirehunter
brendong Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 With Nippers my grand father used to swear by doing a half hitch around the tail but I've never done it. Also maybe try using long shank hooks if you aren't already.
Berleyguts Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Nippers are a very soft bait and I find that the fish take them very quickly. I suggest using fine long shank hooks matching the size to the bait. Bring the point of the hook up through the tail, then give the gape/bend a little twist to take the point just through the shell behind the head. I find that this helps them hold better. One thing with nippers - at least they are free. I assume you are pumping them, not buying them? Baz
bluebottle18 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Always use a small keeper hook(an extra hook size 10not tied on) to help the nipper stay on as well as a hitch knot. Sometimes you can use a larger keeper hook and you will find most of your fish will be caught on the keeper hook. Some fish come back for seconds and get caught or strike the middle or behind the head.
