Bluewater
Had a chat to a local Merc dealer today and asked him what his thoughts were on Etec engines. He claims that they have a habit of exploding! Anyone ever heard of this or is it just a matter of scare mongering from a rival dealer?

He claims that they have a habit of exploding! Anyone ever heard of this or is it just a matter of scare mongering from a rival dealer? There was a recall in the states. The dealer may be exaggerating this a whole lot. http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/recalls...aspx?id=090021T
Bluewater
Interesting, does this mean that problem has been rectified with all newly purchased motors?
myocard
Mentions a replacement part, so this would indicate that a potential issue has been resolved.

johnno
As with all brands there is sometimes issues that arrises with all new motors and batches/ series of motors but we all wish the company backs there product and fixes them. IE recalls and there can be always be some Friday arvo/monday morning motors that fail.Or components that fail from other suppliers in your Xbrand/style motor. But to tell you they are all exploding is a little over the top 4strokes where also evil and blowing up and there where reports they where no good but when the market has a pretty high % of that style/type of engine you here alot more about them I have just had a recall for our hino dutro truck at work which is 4-5 years old and it will be fixed under warranty. a boat
Hi, your first statement should be the answer to your question and NO we have not seen any E-TEC explode as you put it and never heard of one. Yes BRP, as all good companies do, did a recall on a certain serial group of I-2 and I-3 engines that due to the fuel that they are forced to run in the States the vapour seperator they found could leak. As a result they contacted owners and not only did they replace the vap separator but the complete fuel pump as well. We did about 6 units so not alot were affected and none of these engines showed signs of the gasket weeping. Trust me I have seen more issues with other brands that have not had a recall due to that companies reluctance. A Merc or whatever brand dealer that has to rely on bad mouthing another product with BS claims like this instead of highlighting why they believe their engine is better is obviously concerned about the fact their engine is not as good. The fact that Evinrude is no.1 in clean sales here in Oz has to show you the engines are good and as I have said many times any mechanical thing made by humans can fail, but with a non declining 5 year warranty anything major like blowing up or breaking something like a con rod due to a fauty part will happen early in an outboards life. When I toured the E-TEC factory in the US a few years ago it is a state of the art factory and Evinrude is the only brand that run all engines made in test tanks at all RPM for 13 minutes to weed out any problems before they get shipped. No other dirty or in particular clean tech engine could cope with going to WOT after minute or two of running and I saw a 3.3L E-TEC come to life for its first time and was at WOT within this time frame and it was run for the whole time I was standng there. As I said no one else runs every engine they make like this. I do not have any worries about recommending Evinrude after seeing how BRP make and stand behind their product and our name in the marine industry and what we recommend and sell is very imprtant to my family and as I like to tell people we sell the best and service the rest. Cheers, Huey.
