cjchen
hey all im geting my hobie revo next tuesday and i've goten a poormans downrigger going base of a big rod, 8000 old reel, some 80lb mono, snapper lead, rubber bands now my question is what kind of hook do i use with the sluggo a big wormhook a jighead? texas rig or California rig all so confusing but looks similar when im trolling wouldn't the sinker be near the hook anyway? thanks!! framedtrash
just use a jigg head the big worm hooks are more for surface work and work around weed beds and they can be a pain i just use a jigg head thats the right size for the sluggo im using
Slaka
How effective is downrigging a sluggo or a deep diver. I have been tossing up the idea of buying a downrigger, just not sure how effective they are when using lures.
framedtrash
all a downrigger does is hold your bait/lures at a depth you set so when using lures you can get bib less lures and run them at the exact depth you want them to run you can run the boat at any speed you want as the lure isnt doing the work of keeping it at depth the downrigger is if you use lures that dive you just need to work out how deep there diving on the own then lower the downrigger to the depth you want to fish at downrigging is a great way of catching flattys on lures simply use a lure that will dive about 2mtrs then set your bomb about 2mtrs off the bottom as you troll around the lure is going to be hitting into the sand and puffing up sand grabbing the flattys attention Edited February 8, 2010 by Framedtrash
Mercer007
Can you post a picture of your setup as I am very interested in your poor mans downrigger. I too am a poor man looking for a cheap option to get me started. Cheers
framedtrash
use this as a guide replace the sinker with a 150-200gm jigg (this will also help attract the fish) and replace the lure with a livie and use some strong line Edited February 9, 2010 by Framedtrash
daleyboy
From a kayak i would just the jig head, maybe go slighty heavier to get it deeper, or kayak slower ... unless of course you want to get it really deep, then id use the snapper lead and just go with a worm hook or a really light jig head (which would also be less likely to spin than a worm hook) Edited February 11, 2010 by daleyboy
