swong
Heyas, I've only just started taking up fishing (3 months) and usually go to FTB every 2 weeks or so and was wondering if some knowledgeable people might be able to give me some pointers? I started off fishing only at high tide on the northern-eastern side facing the harbour bridge and managed to catch bream and whiting (all v.small). I also fished on the north western side where it leads to the BBQ area and picked up some whiting/bream there too. After reading some of the posts, it seems that people are recommending walking out onto the main sandbar underneath the bridge as it approaches low tide. . so i recently bought a pair of gumboots and waded onto the main sandbar and caught some more whiting while casting around the pylons. I did notice that on the way to the main sandbar that there were a couple of flatty impressions in the long sandbank between the mangrove tree entrance and the bridge. I tried fishing onto this sandbank at hightide from shore with no luck so far (bar some more whiting!) Are there any other strategies or things i should take note for fishing in this area? Thanks a ton. FWIW, i've been using squidgy wrigglers (65mm bloodworms)[fresh bait gives me rashes:/] with a mixture of slow, stop and start, jerking retrieves after waiting for the SP to hit the bottom
jack29ham
Gday, I used to fish FTB alot, It can be a bit hit and miss but there are a few techniques which hopefully may help. On the Hunters Hill side of the bridge there seems to be alot of small tailor which are dynamite live bait, you can either use bait or use small halco twisties (5g max) which is alot of fun as you can see the tailor chase the lure. Have another rod setup so you can launch the tailor towards the pylons. We have caught alot of big flathead this way using live tailor and even tailor strips. On the bbq side of the bridge go right to the end, you will be able to see a few branches in the water. the water depth is probably only 1-2 meters, drop and unweighted prawn or whitebait right next to the branch in the water and you should get some good bream, use a heavier leader about 10lb should do the trick, You could also use sp's if you wanted I have never tried. I have used sp's on the sandbank and it is a very good flathead area, cast as far as you can towards the houses and just slowly roll the plastic back, The key at this spot is to be patient as I have found a slow retrieve is much better than a fast retrieve with lots of movement. I have had success on the squidy wriggler and the squidy fish as it has a more natural action than a flickbait etc... Anyways I hope this helps. stricko4
Guys, You need to keep in mind that the leagal size for tailor is 30cm whether keeping for consumption or using for bait. That includes using as live bait. I've fished FTB on & off for a while & have had quite a bit of success using small hard bodies like SX40's & Stewy's fav pink Smillin Jacks.
