jewgaffer
Or what about flint n steel? Can i do some lb fishing from there Hi Jonathan. It's not unusual to see fishermen fishing landbased off the flat rocks which are right at Flint & Steel proper. The flat rocks are right on the point itself and quite low in respect of the water, and it's easy to walk along the shoreline there and fish wherever you chose, but the deepest water section carries on into the upriver side. As long as you cast out as far as you can, it doesn't matter where you fish within walking distance upriver as far as the point of the beach on your left as you'll be fishing into a common drop off or a valley which, from a boat fisherman's point of view would be during a run in tide- drops into the deepest section of F & S within the first hundred metres or so from the main point where you'll be fishing. Some of the biggest jewfish in the Hawkesbury have been caught by boat fisherman anchored in close inside the curve which from a F&S landbased point of view when moving a fair way along that section curves inwards all the way to Hungry Beach. You'll be fishing at the point of the curve and you'll notice that the shoreline runs inwards on your left as you're facing the water. Experienced boat fishermen would have rods out at each side of the boat and you should see a boat light or two at some part of the night anchored along that curve as far as almost opposite Juno marker which can be used as a line up. Actually, one of the members Geoff and myself had a day session up there recently and anchored just off Flint & Steel reef to drop out a few baits on the way thru to Pittwater. We noticed a couple of fisherman who were well set up with beach rods, rod holders & buckets etc who appeared to have been dropped off there by someone in a boat as I don't think too many fishermen would consider hiking down there. Having said that, there is a radio operated water taxi based at Palm beach which is not far into Pittwater and it is only a matter of a ten minute trip to Flint and Steel and you could arrange the return trip as well. If you and a mate or two wanted to do a session down there fishing apart to cover each side of the marker for instance, I think you should be able to get dropped off wherever the water taxi can pull in along the shoreline and the water taxi driver would have probably dropped off fishermen along there before. If you decided to fish at Flint & Steel, I don't think you would find a better spot in the Hawkesbury to do a land based session and particularly an over nighter with suitable gear and a good variety of bait. You should be able to catch live bait under float anywhere along that section preferably during a run in tide in the early morning and also in late afternoon. If you were to fish a night session at Flint & Steel and get good distance into your casts the possibilities would be enormous. MidNrthFisho
ive been down there 2-3 times and havent caught much decent, only undersize bream flathead and whiting... doesnt mean they arent out there though! if you try casting squid jigs off the jetty when high tide is around dawn/dusk there are usually arrow squid around, even managed to score a few on minow lures! good luck and let us know how it goes

Thanks very much jewgaffer, i wont be able to try that out today but ill defiantly be sure to try it out in the future. We've already organised for apple tree bay, ive heard theres flatty, bream, taylor, whitting, and the odd jewy...Could i just bottom bash and try my luck? Any suggestions? Thanks for all the info everyone, Jono
jewgaffer
Hi Jonathan as Fortheloveof said you would probably get arrow squid down there but Apple Tree Bay is one of those typical boat ramp and jetty places that if you didn't have a boat it would be hard to find any decent spots other than middling grounds where your jewfish baits would attract nothing much else other than rays, peckers and other assorted rubbish and it would be like the feeling you get when you don't have a boat and can't get access the blue water around the corner when you haven't had a decent bite inside. If you were restricted to fishing one spot and a school of say bream were to come in at some stage or other, there would more than likely only be a short bite period and it can be at some time or other in a tide when bream happen to come in to where your baits are. Still fishing in any bay in Cowan can have its busy moments but as far as fishing landbased for jewfish is concerned I think you would need to fish the known landbased spots or find access to somewhere more specific. Perhaps try Cottage Point and have a look around the marina. It would be a run in tide proposition again but try and include a couple of hours over the top on a night when the tide tops in the middle of the night as that gives you more hours of darkness to have your jewfish baits out when the tide has picked up for the last half of a run in tide. Cottage Point and also the side of Patonga boat ramp going towards the old cottages out on their own are good enough places to fish for arrows and you can run the arrows right on the point of Darkes Cnr from sunset on- as if you make your way any further around the corner you are out of the main run and you'd be fishing into boulder country which is a boat proposition further out, and fishermen who fish in the river up there regularly would know that arrows come in along that section. It would be interesting if you and your mate do get a chance to do a night session at Flint and Steel and it might be an idea to try arrow squid and also green eye squid that you can get in the alcove between Palm beach and the long wooden jetty. You could get there earlier and fish for squid before you jump into the water taxi and I don't think it will be too long before you and your friend decide to have a landbased session at Flint & Steel. dmad_dood
what horrible conditions did you experience - Sydney was bright and sunny til about 4pm The actual weather was fine, sunny and not too hot, just the wind was ridiculous as soon as you get up too north head the swell and wind was scary to say the least especially in the tinny. tallman
Yeah mate Apple tree is not a good place to fish, you're better off finding the deeper water off the rocks and cliffs (be careful)
