Kings Not Biting....

Hello All,

Just wondering if anyone has had the problem of being able to see kings but not being able to get them to take any baits that are presented?

They seem to take pieces of anything thrown to them as they are right on surface, but as soon as a hook is in any of the baits they just ignore them???

Very frustrating , but was hoping someone might have a suggestion for this....

thanks

It happens all the time, and its very damn frustrating :ranting2: . Last week at one of our usual spots the kings were in the berley trail within seconds of arriving. They would not touch yakkas, fresh squid, or the berley which was cubed pillies. Another raider witnessed this when we threw pillies beside there boat, instant kingys everywhere.

They would not even take a unweighted cube of pillie feed into the berley mix. :1badmood:. Such is life I suppose.

I feel ya pain, a few days after witnessing Dan and Greg's efforts to entice them, I gave it a shot with cubed Gars, they took every cube except the one with the hook. They can see the hook or the FC leader or just aren't happy with the unnatural buoyancy of even an unweighted cube. A 63cm rat did take a 2inch powerbait grub with 1/32 jighead with 4lb and no leader (don't bother asking why my mate didn't put a leader or why he was even flicken around in 50 feet of water with my bream stick)

Go you Roosters!

Happens with all sorts of fish from time to time... gives me the sh**ts.

Have any of you tried a small pillie cube with an even smaller hook that is completely embedded within the bait with only like 2mm of the hook point sticking out? Or is everyone too scared to use such small and weak hooks?

If that doesn't work then I give up.

time, patience, the right hook and technique and these kings are easy.

I have caught nearly 100 kings over the past 3 seasons on nothing more than pillies and a hook

The right hook pattern, with the pilchard rigged correctly and you'll hook the kings you see swimming around the back of the boat

I have put details in previous post (as have others) on how to catch them, look it up or pm me

When i fish Clifton Gardens i only take pillies, and dont bother with squid or yakkas and have caught kings morninings, lunchtime

or my favourite sneaking off after work and fishing till sunset

Roosterman,

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have encountered this when catching livies. I use flourocarbon leaders and have made sure i completely bury the hook in the bait.

The trick is to outsmart the cheeky buggers. Once i buried the hook i realised it was the line that they could see. So i suspend the bait on the surface with my line completely out of the water. The kings come up and suck my bait from the surface like a trout eating a dry fly. It's amazing visual fishing especially a rod's length from the boat.

I suspect this is because the fish have learnt given the massive amount of bait being offered to them! It won't be long before they figure out that a floating pillie is not a good meal after all!
