fanatic
G'day fellow raiders Just a quick report. Got a chance to fish Port Hacking off a private jetty over the weekend. The conditions were beautiful for fishing, except the mozzies at night. Armed with pillies, prawns and nippers to target some breams. I got my adrenaline fix with 2 nice size breams...32cm and 27cm Pillies did the damamge on them. After 4 hours we were ready to call it a day and burley up all the left over bait (it was a LOT of burley!) With our rods in the rod holders i had some hope left of seeing one of the two rods buckle one more time. I said to my mate "surely all that scent will attract a taker"...sure enough as i said that my pillie rod goes zzzzzzz...yup must be another big bream, as i was reeling i got tangled with another rod so i called my mate to get the net. It turns out to be a soapie...probably about 50cm. As i was waiting for the net to arrive it chewed through my 30bl line, winked and swam off I was so convinced that i was gonna have my first jewfish snap with this post, eventhough it was no monster. Anyhow i didnt go home empty handed...great fun with the soft tip Shimano rods.

Make sure you check your leader everytime you put a bait out and check the knots as Jew don't really bite you off in my experience , they have conical teeth and I've caught plenty 45 to 75 cm models on 4lb and 6lb leader , Took JB Jew out and he got one on 4lb that went about 83cm in the Parra river . The only other thing could be to much drag , that could snap the line , but with 30 lb you would have to guess there was a nick in your line. Keep trying and you will hook another Jew , and hopefully get a couple pics , Never Give Up. Good luck next time Bubba

Yeh there was probably some wear and tear in the line by the end of the night as there was a little reef spot that i was targeting. I might have rushed tying the knots from being so exited to get my line wet too. Anyways i know fishing for jewfish is an artform within itself...maybe one day i'll have enough expertise to land a trophy sized one.
tumra
hi where in port hacking do fish? like where in port hacking is the wharf? thanks Addictive fisher, fish the wharf at gunnamatta bay near the baths. its a pretty good spot to fish at dusk with a run in tide. Make sure you have a head lamp because it is pitch dark there. If you can get your bait past the small tailor that have been there over the past few weeks you will get some good size bream. If you can get out there on a weeknight rather than on the weekend its better, too many fishermen on fridays and saturday nights.
