steze
Hi everybody, me and my girlfriend have just booked a holiday to the hamiltons in July. Ive heard that there is some great fishing there. I have looked at some of the fishing charters that are available there. Does anybody know which would be the best one to go to? Would you recommend bringing my own rod ? I had a friend who brought his own gear and hired out a dingy and said that was pretty fun. Any info would be great thanks
SZ1
Hi Steze, I just came back from Hamilton island the fishing was pretty exciting, I didn’t go on any charter but I did hire a Dinghy from the marina for a day, we didn’t get much to write home about but the constant action sure made up for it. At times we had a large travelly which looked like Golden or GT at the back around 10kg that won’t take anything, I threw some poppers/pencils and stick baits around for a few strikes from mackerels. But be sure to book early as they do book out pretty fast. I fished the local ferry wharf next to the airport every night, the place is a really good fishing spot, we got spooled 2, one night we caught 26 squids all around the 30cm mark. You get heaps of finger mark there but normally not very big. Saw a 100kg plus grouper cruise by. But there is a local etiquette where the last person/group leaves the wharf have to clean it up and give it a spray with the fire hose. It would be good to bring your own gear and you can fish anytime you wish. Also I forgot to mention, make sure you get down to the marina out the front of the Dinghy hire place at 5pm in the after noon for when the charter boats comes back, there is always a swarm of GT 20kg plus waiting for free feed, as the charter boats feeds them they off cuts etc. cheers, Sz1

Im looking foward to the trip. What sort of gear do you think i should bring.? Keeping in mind ive got a 20kg weight limit and also im unsure of what you can bring on board. Ive never fished for GT's before. Im definetly going to book a charter just to see how its like as ive never gone on one before.

HI Mate, Well I just brought along some 2-4kg flick stick with 2500 reel and a couple of 4000 size reel spooled with 20lb and lone Pe3 Jigging Outfit. I sacrificed clothing and other stuff for my tackle, bearing in mind I had to bring enough gear for 5 ppl to use. With the GT’s around I think they are pretty hard to get and the ones in the marina is some what like a pet for them over there and no one fishes for them. I didn’t go on any charter so I wouldn’t know what gear to bring, but I did see they had TLD’s on board when they came in. For the local land based stuff I would just bring a long a 20lb combo for a bit of fun and maybe a heavier outfit to live bait under a balloon, as said the local ferry jetty next to the airport is a gun place, there is a lot of snags when you cast out so we just dropped bait at over feet. Hope that helps.
