Avet Reels

Hi there

I am in the market for a new Overhead - preferably a lever drag... Only problem is i'm left handed (well actually i'm RH but don't get me started on that argument - i.e. everyone else fishs around the wrong way! :biggrin2: ).

I have a PENN 321 Level wind which has been fine but it doesn't pull much drag. I want to use the new reel on my 15Kg overhead stick for trolling and also as a heavier livebait/downrigging rod.

The only other options you can get left handed are either a Daiwa Saltiga SA30L or any of the Avet reels which can be requested in a left hand wind. I can get a really good price on the Saltiga online from the states and the Avets are a similar price. The saltiga is a star drag though and i would much prefer a lever drag particularly for trolling.

Does anyone have any experience of AVET reels. I have heard mixed reviews of them - some people swear by them, others say they are a bag of @hit!

If anyone can tell me something about them it would be much appreciated. Also if anyone knows of anywhere that can do reasonably priced LH conversions then also please let me know.

Cheers

Jim

Hey jim,

I own an avet black magic bmx. In my opinion they are a fanastic reel, very simple reel to strip down and maintain, no fancy plastic trimmings to break and with plenty of guts. I'm planning to by the jx raptor next from the states. Only concern about the new reels is that the drag is glued down to prevent saltwater intrusion so am not sure how I will go if I need to change it. But I'm sure there will be a way around it.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Daniel

Yeah i am looking at a JX or an LX... a couple of people have also suggested looking at Accurate reels, a little more expensive, and i have now found out that Jigging master also do LH on request. Oh oh - looks like i might need to spend a bit more money!
