fishmaniac
I had originally planned to head out on tuesday morning in what were ideal looking conditions, however, I had not had the opportunity to finish fixing my downrigger yet so spent that morning getting set up. I got up this morning at 8:30 and decided i would quickly run out using some frozen squid in search of kings before going to uni. I was very pressed for time, not even getting the boat in until 9:30 so aborted any missions to collect fresh bait. I usually check the manly waverider before heading out but the site was down this morning and so when i exited the harbour i was confronted with a 2m swell and about 1m of SE'ly chop... not the most pleasant conditions when you are fishing in a tinnie. Anyways, i went to a few bommies i have been working and deployed my first bait. It was hit in short time but i lost the fish due to a pulled hook. I wasn't too dissapointed as this fish was probably only around 60cm. The next troll run was a bit more successful and after a nice little tussle i boated a fish that would be roughly 76cm. The next troll run i landed a baby kingy of around 45cm who was promptly released. I had used all the 'better' bits of my bait and after not getting a hookup in the next 10mins i decided to race back in for cleanup. There was a dissapointing aspect to the day, that was when i saw another boat turn sharply ahead of me, heading straight for a bouy. I signalled with my hand for him to change direction in case he did not see it which he interpreted that as me telling him where to troll. So he decided it was right for him to make a big deal about telling me where to go. It was very upsetting considering i was simply keeping an eye out for a fellow fisher... I have a question regarding the fish traps, I and so many others fish for dolphin fish around these things but, what sort of fish do they target with these traps? I notice they are usually in place for several weeks!? No pics again due to the extremely sloppy conditions and short nature of the trip. jembro
Dude! I wish I had all that spare time. I'd be chasing kings around the harbour during the week if I could. I'm hoping to have some luck with the down rigger on saturday.
herbmozo
Hey mate, same old story! There are so many clowns with a boat these days. Try going out the FAD, was there last week and people just drive straight in front of you over the school and scare them all off! I don't know what their thinking is. I take it you were fishing the colours? Was gonna fish there too yesterday arvo but it was way too sloppy to come that far from Botany. Cheers mate, tight lines! plankton
I have been wondering the same thing.... I would say that the traps target leatherjackets. Can't think of anything else as dumb which would swim into one!
fishmaniac
Mate, i hope you are right about the fish traps being leatherjacket traps! They can catch as many of them buggers as they want for al i care, in fact why not plonk a perimeter of them around the jigging reefs!!! I have noticed that many of these traps are located on apparently flat and structureless seabeds which is interesting. Perhaps there are different traps for different fish such as snapper, jackets and morwong etc. HM, i was not fishing the colours but some other bommies in the area that i have stubled across.
