Bleeding Green
All, Due to the back seat of my dual cab not being wide enough to comfortably fit 3 child restraints I am looking at the option of changing it for a sedan. This will mean that when we go camping I will have to store more gear in the boat. I am worried about the weight as my trailer is unbraked. Considering the boat (475mm alu boat) weighs 380kg + motor 80kg + trailer 150kg(do these figures sound right?) with fuel fishing gear batteries etc I am not much under the 750kg maximum unbraked towing capacity. So I am thinking of updating the trailer to enable to carry more gear in the boat. How much would I expect to pay for a good condition second hand braked trailer? How hard is it to setup a trailer to suit a specific hull shape? Where is the best place to look for trailers? Any other info/advice is greatly appreciated. I am just considering my options at this stage. Thanks for your help/input.
DGF
i went through all this last week i went shopping for a brand new trailer for my 5.3 mtr runabout and well braked trailers start at around the $2400.00 mark for a 16" trailer and thats only going up by couple hundred for the size for 14-15" ones were around the 2200 mark braked if your in sydney there are 2 places i can suggest to call and get quotes they were the cheapest for my self, ill pm them to you if you want. oz_brett
if your trailer is in reasonable condition why not increase the wheel size and add brakes to it. Talk to a trailer manufacturer I'm sure if you find the right one they will advise or even modify your old trailer to suit, would have to be cheaper then a new trailer. The trailer is 10 yrs old but condition is fine. Do you know how much bigger then wheels need to be? I wouldn;t want to raise the trailer which would make it harder to retreive the boat? But I guess I would have this problem with a new trailer too.

You may not even need to change rim size, your tyres have a load rating on them the better the tyre the more they carry Ive just upgraded my tyres from a realy cheep nylon belted tyre with load rating of under 400KG my new tyres are steel radials still far from the best but they have a rating of 615KG (per tyre)you can actualy get light truck tyres for these small rims. My rims are only 13inch 5 stud. Remember to do this properly and leagal you would have to get a new compliance plate on your trailer and because of the brakes you would need a pink slip for rego each year. Just another cost and pain in the bum really. I think I might get the trailer and boat weighed so I really know what I am dealing with. Thanks for you help. dunc333
1 of the 2 big boat supermarkets sell everything you need to change trailer to mech braking system and if you do yourself should cost you around $580.00 if your mechanically minded.cheers dunc333
