Wasabi
Am contemplating a boat trip with friends on a Riviera 51EB from Sydney to Lord Howe next year. Seeking information and guidance from anyone who has done that trip to help plan our expedition. Info regarding best routes, time of year, anticipated fuel consumption at speed, offshore communications (should we carry a sat phone etc), potential problems, mooring etc at Lord Howe would be appreciated. bluebottle18
The best advice I can give is to travel the 300 miles it is ONE WAY up or down the coast and get the feel of what the minumum is required in petrol. Radar and all other navigation equipment is recommended. Fuel over there may not be easily available. You would need to do this a few times and take down plenty of information as you go This experience will certainly tell you what would be ahead if you choose to do it It wont tell you what the sea and weather will be and how good you are prepared for the unknown. Having worked on trawlers I would not do it.

Whats the fuel capacity? what types of main engines and gen set? Fuel comsuption at 8/10/12kts and cruisng speed? may have to look into a fuel bladder. Offshore comms you should have a MF/HF radio, SAT-C, maybe a basic GMDSS station, Fleet 55 are all options. Should look at having a 96nm Radar installed with atleast a 6 foot scanner. Anyone onboard compentent in Offshore navigation? Potential problems besides mechanical(will have to have extensive spares onboard to cover nearly everthying that could go wrong). I have never spoken to someone who has a good trip across the Tasman Sea, its rough. There is limited anchorages around the island and they can be uncomfortable. You would have to contact the island regarding extra fuel for when your there and for the trip back. Your best bet is to run to Port Macquarie, refuel then head out.you maybe able to organise to have your own supplies shipped out on the LHI Trader. THE FISHING IS AMAZING at LHI. Penguin
I would go up the coast and follow the LHI trader out to the island. That way you have another boat nearby in case something happens. cheers
