Deep Sea Fishing

On Sunday me & the Boys talked about going fishing on Monday or Tuesday, Tuesday been better as we had to sort out our work issues, chores etc.

Set the clock for 4.30 am and damm thing went of 5.30, got straight up, kettle on and lucky the gear was in the car the night before, got to foreshore drive ramp and my mates was still setting the boat up, I thought to myself at least I got some extra shut eye, so of we go and headed straight out to Sydney wide fad, On the way there we seen some bird action and we started trolling towards them and got a hit right away, One striped tuna and that was it.

Continued on and got to the fad with two boats already there, we ended up with 4 Mahi in the esky, let the undersized go, been on 58 or cm, the other guys on the boat must have around 6 or each, then I hear a lot of noises on the other boat, something big was hooked on, after watching them for 15min they got busted of, we didn't see what it was.

Then we headed for another Troll an hour or so for a Donut then headed for the peak.

Dropped in out jigs and were losing them to Jackets

Revenge time, we caught a couple and cut them up for bait and got 60 of the Bastards :ranting2:

Then started Trolling again all the way to the Botany fad and back to Botany heads for three Bonys and back home.

Went out 6am Back 4.14pm Top day and water was Flat as lake.

The yellow fin come yet.

P.S sorry for the late report.

Well done Groper,

Were they your first dollies? If so congratulations and hopefully you will snare some bigger ones soon!

Andrew

We went out on Sunday and were plagued by the jackets for the entire day. Thirty sinkers were lost by seven fishos. We did reduce their numbers by 50 but this was the proverbial drop in the ocean. One green toad was also in the mix! The highlight of the day was five good sized pigfish that came on board.

our Problem was we couldn't even touch the bottom without jackets jumping all over the baits or rigs and even having our lines bitten off :1badmood: we were catching jackets at 20meters as well :ranting2:

Good effort Basil, George will be astounded :biggrin2: this result certainly proves that the whole area from Wollongong to Newcastle and at least a thousand kilometres seaward is holding so many fish every three feet that there must be standing room only in any direction :D

Cheers

You definately are progressing Basil  ... you're certainly up to it and can afford a couple of twelve inch Alveys for your bottom bashing and a Tiagra or two so it would be a good idea to invite some of our better deep sea fishermen to go out with you and just keep your eyes open both fish wise and safety wise...you'll soon find next time you go out early and fish off national park you'll have the gear ready and you'll be wanting to run some of your stripies and bonito for bait..

The back is ok to a point I suppose Basil but my doctor has to look at recent scans taken around both hip areas and things seem to be locked up hurting my legs real bad, so I still can't handle the boat on my own and I sure miss fishing the beaches ... Why don't you give George a call and arrange to go down to Wanda with Leon or better still go in opposite the old dog track at Wollongong. George and Leon like to spread the rods out and would appreciate the extra man for the waist deep stuff :biggrin2:

Cheers

When my grandfather was alive, he told me the jackets were so thick he could hold a piece of fish on the surface and pull them out by hand. It appears the bloody things have not changed their breeding habits since the 1920's. I asked a friend at the Fisheries Dept. was any research being done on the habits/breeding aspects of the chinamen jackets, but she was not aware of anything.

A few years ago while fishing off Cronulla, I pulled out 2 jackets about 45cm long. Inside their guts were parts of a small blue spotted ray. It appears the jackets had attacked the ray and eaten it alive as it was so fresh. The tail was chewed but still in one piece, plus other pieces of the wing flaps and a complete eye. I put the pieces together and it was more than half the ray's body. Other times I have killed a jacket and thrown it into the water when the school swims under the boat, and dozens swim in for a feed. If you fell over into the school, they would probably attack like piranhas. Some times, all the jackets have empty stomachs, so they must be swimming about searching for anything they can eat.

Nice one Basil. Any fish is a good fish. I personally loove to eat jackets, so catching them is ok with me. If they turn up, on goes the steel trace, and into them. The wife is happy too.big-smiley-001.gif

we had lots of rigs ready just in case, all black wire trace right down to the sinker and hooks. :)
