humesy
G'day, After dozens of fishless trips (apart from the odd flattie, ray, shark, catfish and numerous eels) a decent jewie has come aboard. I have seen 3, 15kg+ fish landed within 30 metres of my boat and last week missed a hook-up on a solid jew so results have always been just around the corner. Last night's fish wasn't a screamer (75cm) but was satisfying none the less. Jewgaffer Byron has been a big help along the way and yesterday's fish came from a favourite spot of his, at the top of the tide, right on dusk, on a butterflied yakka. Bait came courtesy of my mate's 4 and 6 year olds who had a ball bringing in the yakkas that afternoon in Pittwater. tide'n'knots
well done humesy, A 75cm jew is nothing to sneeze at thats for sure, I bet there would be a lot of raiders who would give their eye teeth for one that size! congatulations on a fine catch and it just goes to show that sometimes you need to be very persistent to catch jew but if you hang in the rewards finally come - twin 1 and lumpookey are a fine example of that. Good on you byron for helping a fellow raider nail a jew! pete.
jewgaffer
I'm glad the spot produced for you Andrew, I knew you had hooked up something decent when my mobile beeper went off as the pic came thru .. it's not the sort of spot where you'd except to catch jewfish but it's a good place to settle into during a southerly and apparently the jew think so too ... I was hoping to hear that you'd hooked up the same jew that owes me a Tiger rod and an irreplacable Tica reel that went overboard due to one of those useless plastic rod holders exploding back in January...I would be reluctant to even swap an apple for a hundred of the things .... While the whole river is loaded with soapies, I have an idea that the bigger fish are likely to be sweating on the bait fish that gather around the box head side and are getting into them during the run out tide. It might be a good idea to slip down from Bayview and fish the run out just out from both Little box Hd and also the bait grounds just around the eastern cnr of Box Head as there were lots of trag there during the floods we had a couple of years ago.. humesy
Cheers fellas, The mysteries of the mighty Hawkesbury are slowly starting to reveal themselves. It is such a different ballgame to my normal stomping ground of Middle Harbour, where I catch jewies reasonably consistently. There is so much more water and tidal flow. Local knowledge is obviously crucial and I find that the waiting game is a large part of potential success. This means it is so important to pay attention to detail with rigs, etc because when the big hook up comes, you don't want to muck it up. It takes a new level of patience to fish a whole tidal cycle, replacing baits every 15 minutes, releasing eels, etc, without so much as a run. Even though it was just a schoolie (yes a thoroughly decent and tasty fish) I find it extra satisfying to catch a fish in a new location. Enough encouragement to do it all over again, and again, and again. Byron, I did have a quick look at a spot towards the mouth on the way home. The sea was as flat as it gets and my session was only a paltry 10 hours long at that stage. . There wasn't much doing but I note your suggestion with interest. Unfortunately I am going to be very busy over the next few months for the long sessions you favour. It will be a stretch to get together on the river to avenge the loss of your gear. zen801
Hi Andrew, Well done on the jew especially since it came from the HR system. Mate you got patience for them as you have too if your serious about getting big ones. I have given up on targeting jews lately and gone for the instant grat of MH kingies. A few of the MH spots just havent fired up for the big flatties and jews as they usually do this time of year. Cheers
