Crazydruss
Hey guys, Well I've been fishng for jewies for a while now but I have one thing that gets me all the time.... How much drag should you be running when using baits such as big long strips of squid ?I usually use about 1kg drag for baits and very little drag for livies but I'm hearing alot of people saying use a locked drag on baits as they hook themselves is this true? What has a better strike rate for bigger jewies as they are my main target? What about livies such as yellowtail pinned through the nose how much drag? I've had a fair bit of success in the parra river for them catching approx 60 or more fish in the past 6 months and at one point had a strike rate of 100% in 12 outings most times getting 2 or 3 sometimes as many as 8 in the size range of about 50-87cm and released most of em except some smaller ones I keep for dinner sometimes. I know I've had a pretty good success rate compared to some but my goal is to catch a metre plus model just for fun and of course release it after a quick pic. Another question I have is does anyone know a decently reliable spot for bigger jew? Any help is appreciated also if anyone wouldn't mind teaching me some better techniques or wants a jew fishing buddy then let me know more than happy to help out some guys struggling for their first as I've done for many of my friends or even swapping some spots I know some golden ones. BTW I'm landbased

BTW I'm landbased Hi Crazydruss, The best spot I have found in the last 30 years is forster Tuncurry break wall, fishing the top of the tide with back to back mullet fillets, about 1/2 drag. I have never seen any bigger caught at other places, you will certainly get your 1 meter fish. cheers Rick.

Jewhunter
Your best shot at a big jew is to hit the beaches right now. The mullet are running & the jew will be on their tails. As the weather cools the big jew patrol the beaches. You don't get as many hits but they are usually good fish. Find a good gutter anywhere from Narrabeen to Palm Beach & you're in with a shot. Cronulla can fish well also. Best baits will be live mullet & tailor or fresh slabs of both these fish. Mullet this month & then tailor after that. Hope this helps & good luck. Cheers, Grant. Fair enough thanks for that what beachs can you suggest that are fishing well at the moment?I've heard recently Narrabeen has been good is that correct? Also any advice on my question about drag pressure on jewies on baits and livies? Edited May 11, 2010 by Crazydruss

Also any advice on my question about drag pressure on jewies on baits and livies? Fish with rod in hand & your reel in fight drag. When you feel the 1st bump of a jew drop your rod & point it at the water. When it pulls tight smack it & smack it hard. You will hook up more often than not. I live too far away now to give any specific advice on where to fish right now. Try Narra, Newport, Whale & Palmy. Whatever beach holds the best gutter. From what I have heard they are all fishing well atm. Fish with self caught bait just after the new moon & just before the full on a rising big evening/night tide & you will get your fish. The rest is up to you. Cheers, Grant.
