Possibly A Reel Silly Question

hi raiders,

my fishing knowledge and limits are increasing, so too are my boating abilities and soon will be purchasing a epirb to slowly start heading out of botany, hacking, syd harbour etc. will bottom bash in guess and kings too(though have never targeted or caught them before) most of my combos are smaller types only having a couple of heavier rods for jewies.

looking at doing some live baiting, trolling and perhaps some jigging, have never used overhead reels before hence was looking at a larger stradic 8000 or even saltist 6500 in the conventional reel type. are both these reels suitable??? if i was looking at overheads i assume a calcutta or again a saltist come to mind.

also i assume the purpose of a level wind is to stop line going all over the place without the need to thumb the line on retrieve which leads me to my next question, when is this necessary or is there a technique in particular ie jigging trolling or ive baiting that a level wind is necessary, and vice versa a reel without level wind

i guess thats it for now guys

mick

if u are gona jigg for kings go for a threadline (eggbeater) reel overheads are ok but u want to keep the weight down when jigging, unless u are hulk hogan and can lift weights allday! also thumbing the line on is a pain in the a$$ when jigging. id say saltist would be my option out of the range u have been looking at.
