yakfishing
Gday all, long time no post. We went out to the Hawkesbury to chase some blackys on sunday and weren't disappointed. Getting fresh cabbage off some local rocks was a bit dicey as there was a little bit of swell around. Dismounting the boat went without incident. Garry at the helm and myself and Dylan jumping off. Got a good tub full, but our departure from the cabbage grounds didn't go without leaving a sizable chunk out of said rocks. Fishing this area was not working for us as we couldn't position the boat in close enough, so we head back up river to calmer waters. I wouldn't say I'm a fantastic luderick angler. It's been a while and I couldn't remember the rig, however after a laborious effort I came up with a laughable concoction.... which then had to be untangled. "Jeez I hate blackfishing" I said to no-one listening. Dylan was on in the first 5 minutes, which lifted my spirits and his. A nice 32cm fish. I finally got my odd arrangement of cork and lead in the water, and I too was onto a similar fish in the first 5. We fished for a couple of hours producing some more as big as 37cm, getting downs and inquisitions on every drift. There were many missed takes, most likely due to our inexperience. One take I did not miss though, but almost did... As Dylan strikes a down and is onto another fish I turn to congratulate him, looking back to find my float completely inconspicuous. I struck to solid run toward the rocks. My Snyder Glass 11' Mag Bream pole did me no wrong and I easily had the muscle to turn him away from the rocks in close proximity, and the flexibility to absorb the thumping tail beats that ensued. After allowing him to exert himself in safe water for a while I led him to the net without much drama, and I could finally start breathing again. He measured a nice fat 39cm. Just short of the 40 mark but still a PB for me. Funny he went a lot harder than the 37. “Jeez I love blackfishing!” I said, I think they heard me that time
Michael Hatte
Top effort mate ive heard its a little tough to find them up in the hawkesbury, great little session!!! Has anyone wondered why there are alot of blackfish around the sydney area with a deformitie just behind there head or at the start of there dorsal fin, it got me buggered? Must be from birth cause ive noticed the little guys have it too.
Luke K
Hi Tristan, Nice work on the blackies mate. Looks to me like you had a great time with the fam. How dare you say,"I hate blackfishing" Glad to see you correct yourself later. Oh and to the previous reply, I believe that divot behind the head is due to trawlers nets. cheers Luke
arpie
Great session fishing there, boys! Hope there wasn't to much blood left on the cabbage spot! Well done on your PB Tristan! When everyone else is catching & I am still on my first bit of weed or cabbage, I think I have been known to say 'Gees I hate blackie fishing!' only to have it change in an instant when hooked up!! "That is why we black fish!" It is amazing how much harder the big fish fight relative to the smaller (not much smaller) versions! That big, slow tail beat gets the heart rate up appreciably! I hooked a bream the other day that I could have sworn was a flattie - similar shake, but, it was a very nice breambo! Yeah, Mick - we get lots of bream & blackies up here as a result of net injury when they were juveniles! Amazing that they survive the carnage, really as they would have been leaving a nice blood trail behind them too! CHeerio ROberta Are you guys going into the blackie challenge? Fishing THe harbour, meeting up elsewhere for BBQ http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=48728&pid=358570&st=20entry358570 Then there is the sp/lure social on June 20th! I will be there!! http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=48683&pid=358403&st=60entry358403 Edited May 26, 2010 by Roberta

Still taste the same, so thats all that matters

yakfishing
Haha nice one. Cheers guys. Bloopin: yeah I've got a pic of a big breambo with the same. I always thought something had taken a bight out of it, but with a lot of injuries in the same spot on other fish it must be as Luke (or Pete) said Roberta: The old story, I've gotta see what the work sitcho is, but I'd like to come along to the blacky challenge. Sunday really fired up my interest again, I got a real kick I haven't felt in a while. Luke: I thought you'd get a giggle from that
rickster
thats from years of ricksters thumb grabbing them around the neck just prior to release! pete One of my mates, Cyclone, reckons that they make them that way now so they're easier to pick up! Originally i used to think that it could have been nets or someting but not any more (really sorry roberta) Got no doubt that it's become heridatry as there's way too many coming in now with the exact same dent. arpie
... thats from years of ricksters thumb grabbing them around the neck just prior to release! pete.... :Funny-Post: Between bream & Blackies, my hands are always pin%%%%%ed & SORE!!! I wish they all had the smooth bit near their face!! Tristan - if you can get there - fish along the wall from the Opera House to the point (Lady Macq's chair?) there are monster blackies there that aren't allowed to be targetted from the shore! The shore, of course, is the Botannical Gardens (which gets locked shut each night) and has officers patrolling during the day to deter LB fishos! Can't stop a yak tho!!!! marley
Nice going there Yakfishing - be warmed thoguh fishing for the blackies can be addictive. At times my experience has been that the smaller fish go harder than the larger variety - the larger ones tend to "roll" and get tired but the little ones just don't give in gav
Centrepin
Fantastic. Loved your post. Blackfishing is just so much fun. Rocks and estuary are very different techniquices but challenges and results are usually worthwhile Pleased you guys had a great day. Yes it is hard to find them in The Hawkesbury system. They seem to be in very specfic spots and feed at specfic parts of the tide, at least where I fish. This year there are more Blackfish around than I have seen for many years. Good luck and keep the posts coming, Geoff
