out n about
Hi all, Due to it being winter and the cold weather has arrived (so to speak) along with the rain , I have started to plan for the next fishing season . I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some info regarding the Lowrance GPS?fish Finder Combos! I am interested in the HDS-5 Fishfinder/GPS Chartplotter as its in my price range and for Sydney Harbour and Jervis Bay fishing I think it is more than adequate. Do any of the members own one? Can you tell me do they already come loaded with AU maps etc? Are they any good? And any other info would be great. By my understanding Lowrance is a very good brand and hence if there are any comparable ones out there please let me know. Thanks in advance guys. Cheers Out n About Hi, we stock and sell Lowrance and the HDS-5 has been popular and I have used them many times and they are very good. Good screen clarity, good performance in where you want to go, ability to determine what transducer you want (deep or shallow-it does cost more for the deep water version), easy to use, ability to add structure scan if and when you want it, it is NMEA2000 compatible if your outboard is-that allows them to "talk" to each other and it comes with an in built map but not very detailed so as with all brands if you want more detail in mapping you need a Navionics card. The direct competitor to this unit is the Humminbird 788CX combo which we also stock and they too are good units. The screen on the HB is better with more pixels, I prefer the mounting of the HB with it swivel bracket but it does not have the ability of side looking (unless you go to the 798CX si). You have to ask yourself if this is a feature you may want and if so go the HB now instead of having to add the structure scan to the Lowrance. Both are the top of the pile in this price bracket. Cheers, Huey.
out n about
Huey, You’re a champ. Thanks for the quick response. I have a 35hp 1998 evinrude and I doubt they will be able to “talk” to one another unless you think otherwise? How much do they cost? And how much is the card? I will not purchase immediately as I’m looking into it at the moment. I’m also going away soon so I need all my cash for the trip. But once I get back it will be the first thing I buy Cheers, Out n about

Both are around the $1K mark depending on which model and brand and the Navionics chart for local is about $280 while it is better value to buy the Oz wide for about $100 more. To go side imagining or structure scan add about $650 to that $1K and once you have used this technology it is fantastic what it shows you or under water structure. Cheers, Huey.
