nelnarn
Hi fellow Raiders, After reading some recent reports i am keen to get out and catch some nice size squid and jig for some Kingfish. My boat can handle outside conditions. I have tried the yamashita squid jigs in the weed beds near the big white house on the left hand side (bass and flinders point)when heading to bate bay but never seem to have much luck. Any tips for catching some nice squid for a salt and pepper feast would be appreciated. Do the squid jigs holding a whole pilchard work better? As for jigging for kingfish, are there any spots worth trying? Not too keen fishing too close to the bombie for obvious reasons. Do the kingfish only hang around reef like structure or can they be caught off the flathead grounds outside? Have tried trolling with various Rapala and Halco lures catching salmon, bonito's and stripeys but no kingfish to date. Any help would be greatly appreciated. A.dawg
Around jibbon beach are some very big specimens of squid Lots of squid being caught around warumbul and lilli pilli although lillipilli gets over squided also good to giv yowie bay a shot. Squid seem to be in the deeper water atm Sorry i hav no knowledge about kingfish Good luck Forgot to add bright orange yo-zuri's in 2.0 seem to be working best on arrows whilst the calamari would prefer 2.5 in blue and 3.0 in brown Edited June 21, 2010 by A.dawg
nelnarn
Hey A.dawg, Thanks for the tip with the squid, i will give it a go off Jibbon beach next time i am out there... Had a look on google earth and it looks like there there is some healthy weed beds over there. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on jigging for king fish... jewgaffer
Hi Nelnarn structure is the key to Kingfish i.e. Established wrecks and reefs go hand in hand with GPS marks, and being able to get hold of a collection of wreck and reef positions in a particular coastal area is what gives one fisherman a distinct advantage over the others as this sort of information is often passed on from generation to generation and goes hand in hand with pro boat sales... the other way to do it is to see where other boats are grouping up in the early mornings , hence the term carparks..... As to your sqidding try using lumo lights during the day time, at one stage I had a hundred of chem lights but found there is a shortage of the actual clips that hold the chem light onto the leader and usually have to use small tubing and toothpicks to hold the chem lights on. Also if your prepared to anchor at the mouth of the Hacking and cop all the ups and downs during the run in tide, approximately 250- 300 metres opposite the small beach at Jibbon there is a small reef there where you;ll strike squid and the reef appears to be a resident cutlefish reef ..you should be able to find this particular little reef on your sounder...
