Thunderace
My Father in law being the generous guy he is has permanently lent me his 4.2 seahawk stacer(about 25 years old, in perfect nick, very low hours, prob less than 200), while getting the info on it, i noticed that the plate says max hp 35, but it's got a 40hp on it. I'm not going without insurance, too big a risk for me. Talked to Telwater(Stacer manufacturer ) and they can't/won't do anything. What are my options ??? Geoff-
I'd say you could either put a 35hp on it or get a maritime engineer to assess your boat and see if it's capable of a 40hp rating.

Catchin Jack
It's the weight of the motor on the transom, not so much the horsepower i think. Huey will be able to clarify it for us. Cheers, Leo
a boat
Hi, this is a grey area with older boats. Telwater, not having made that Stacer would not be able to do anything so what i would do is ring the insurance company and see what they say. Sometimes they will permit this but it is rare and trust me not many people would want to re-rate this boat more then the builder in case there is an accident and then it comes back to them. If the insurance company does not want to help your only option to be covered is to fit a 35HP outboard. As for weight, back when that boat was new there was no heavy "clean" engines around so that is not an issue-nowdays it is and say the Seahawk you buy today, you need to be both under/or at the HP rating as well as the weight restricitions. Ring the insurance comapny you are going to use and see what they say and I would start with Club marine. If that does not work we have a good 35HP engine here that we might be able to work out a good change-over price for that over powered 40HP. Cheers, Huey. If in doubt get a triangle brace either side of the boat from gunwhale to transom welded on and beef up the brace back down to the keel. 5hp isnt gonna make a difference and how many boat acco's do u see around the place? I dunno maybe thats just my laid back attitude. Musty
