patchy
Hi all, havn't posted in a while, and im bit of a newbie...hope its in the right section. I often go rock fishing and already have a 12ft. rod with reel, however i also want to buy a rod for rockfishing by using lures, i have seen many people do this but am new to it. was wondering if any advice can be given on which rod and reel to purchase for spinning lures off rocks, fishing for salmon, bonito, kingy's...anything that bites i guess. my budget is upto 200 dollars for both rod and reel. any advice is appreciated thank you. WillN
for a graphite rod off the rocks there aren't a huge number of options available under $100 (assuming you want to split your $200 evenly). Maybe have a look at the starlo stix shorespin? it's around that price and is graphite and fibreglass composite. I think it's also only 9ft as well. The cheapest full graphite rod I can think of at 12ft is the Daiwa Heartland at $180. From there you have the Nitro Sniper 10' at $330, Daiwa Emblem Pro at $270+ depending on length. As for the reel have a look at the Sienna/Sedona/Sahara. High ratio which is good for spinning and within your price range.
Stippy
I've got a 10ft Penn Spinfisher Big Game Surf which is a carbon composite (very light) blank which would probably be up to the task (managed to pull in my first jewie no sweat ) If you shop around you should find one for significantly less than the $99RRP (I got mine for $74) - rod is designed for spinning reels. Gives you a reasonable amount left to search for a reel to suit. Haven't had much experience spinning bigger lures for the species mentioned but I'd imagine something in a 3000-5000 range would be best; any larger and your arms will begin to fatigue fast because of the weight of the reel. Good luck, Adam.
patchy
thanks for that guys, so i should look for a rod that is graphite and between 9-10 foot? so its easier to spin...? i gues i could get some more money to around 300 to spend, which would help, are there any specs i need for reels, or any other suggested reels and rods would be appreciated
renos
you should try a viva treasue stick- i know its not well known but its full graphite 10ft line weight is around 20-30lb cost wise you could prob pick it up for 100? great rod (= just not the brand name for the reel- > try save for a daiwa saltist.. the 4500 has plenty of drag and a high gear ratio for spinning
